BBC Radio 1 icon Malcom Brown who worked alongside DJ Steve Wright dies as tributes pour in
As an ardent fan who grew up grooving to the rhythm of BBC Radio 1, I am utterly saddened by the demise of Malcolm Brown and Steve Wright, two stalwarts of my cherished radio station. Their contributions, particularly during the 80s, were nothing short of revolutionary.
Beloved radio producer Malcolm Brown, known for his work with disc jockey Steve Wright, passed away.
During the ’80s, Malcolm served as a prominent BBC show producer, participating in programs such as “Young Steve,” “The Afternoon Boys,” and “The Acclaimed Tavern Singer.
Radio host Shaun Tilley expressed his condolences, saying: ‘It’s heartbreaking to learn that the iconic BBC producer Malcolm Brown has passed away.’
He was both admired and well-liked, and he proved incredibly helpful to me while I was producing the My Radio 1 series.
This year on February 12th, broadcasting veteran Steve was discovered deceased in his expensive £2million residence located in Marylebone.
A coroner’s court ruled out a probe into his unexpected death.
According to BBC News reports, the Metropolitan Police previously stated that Mr. Wright’s death came as an unexpected event and is not currently being investigated as a potential crime.
Mr. Wright began working at BBC Radio 1 in 1980, taking over the Saturday evening program. In 1981, he switched to hosting “Steve Wright In The Afternoon,” a position he held until 1993.
After that, he hosted the Radio 1 Breakfast program for a full year up until 1995, followed by a period at private radio broadcasters. He rejoined BBC Radio 2 in 1996 where he took over Steve Wright’s Saturday Show and Sunday Love Songs.
1999 marked the beginning of him replicating Steve Wright’s “Afternoon Show” daily on Radio 2, complete with famous interviews and his engaging “Factoids” segment. He eventually relinquished his position in September 2022 but still hosts “Sunday Love Songs” on BBC Radio 2.
In a schedule shake-up, former BBC Radio 1 host Scott Mills took over the afternoon slot.
Emergency services rushed to the star’s home in Marylebone, central London, just after 10am on February 12, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
