BBC pulls MasterChef Christmas specials amid Gregg Wallace controversy
As a long-time fan of MasterChef, I must say this festive season seems to be losing its sparkle for me. The news of the Christmas specials being cancelled due to allegations against Gregg Wallace has left me quite disappointed. I’ve watched him banter with John Torode for years, and his inappropriate jokes were always a highlight of the show for me.
According to confirmation from the BBC, they have decided not to broadcast the planned two episodes of MasterChef during the holiday season as originally scheduled.
Following a recent announcement by the broadcaster, it’s been revealed that Gregg Wallace is leaving his position on the show due to ongoing investigations concerning historical misconduct accusations against him.
An examination uncovered claims that Mr. Wallace, who served as both a judge and host for the culinary contest, made sexually inappropriate remarks and displayed questionable behavior towards others.
However, his lawyers have denied he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature.
Changing course, the BBC has decided not to air the pre-planned Christmas specials for MasterChef, which was previously stated that all episodes already filmed would be broadcasted as scheduled.
As a hardcore gamer, I was all set for an exciting twist in the usual cooking game – “MasterChef” was about to feature celebrities instead of regular contestants! The star-studded lineup was ready to sizzle up some culinary delights in the show’s kitchen.
Regarding the decision at hand, a representative from BBC stated: “We’ve previously mentioned that MasterChef is an extraordinary competition that transforms the lives of participating chefs. At this moment, the ongoing series of MasterChef: The Professionals is moving forward as scheduled.
In these unique times, we’ve opted against airing the special holiday programs featuring celebrities. They represent a distinct genre of programming.
In the initial Christmas special of a cooking competition show titled “MasterChef Celebrity Edition: Christmas Showdown,” the participants included Max George from The Wanted band, actress Amy Walsh known for her role in Emmerdale, Luca Bish who gained fame on Love Island, and comedian Shazia Mirza.
In the second installment, titled “MasterChef Meets Strictly Festive Extravaganza“, it was planned that dancers Amy Dowden, Gorka Marquez, Kai Widdrington, and Nancy Xu from Strictly Come Dancing would participate, along with Motsi Mabuse presenting a challenge.
It has been confirmed that, aside from MasterChef, another program called Inside the Factory will also not be aired on BBC Two during the pre-Christmas period due to the ongoing controversy surrounding Wallace.
Digital Spy contacted Wallace’s team for a response upon the initial announcement of the investigation, but we didn’t receive any reply.
