BBC Northern Ireland’s new adaptation hailed as “exquisite” boasts a “top tier cast” – here’s what to know

The latest series from BBC Northern Ireland titled “Leonard and Hungry Paul” has officially announced its leading performers, who belong to the highest echelon of acting talent.

This six-part comedy, modeled after Rónán Hession’s 2021 novel with the same title, narrates the journey of two extraordinary friends living in a serene suburban setting. It explores tales involving Judo, ancient Rome, first loves, and the unfolding mysteries of the Universe.

As a gamer, I can’t wait to share that I’ve just learned about an exciting new series I’ll be part of! Filming has recently kicked off in Dublin, and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from Derry Girls, Alex Lawther who stole the show in The End of the Fing World, and Laurie Kynaston, star of Fool Me Once. This is going to be epic!

Hession’s critically acclaimed novel is set to be adapted by Richie Conroy and Mark Hodkinson, with Andrew Chaplin, famous for “Alma’s Not Normal” and “Smoggie Queens”, taking the director’s chair.

Hession expressed great joy upon seeing ‘Leonard and Hungry Paul’ being transformed for television. As an author, it’s truly an honor to witness my writing being reimagined in a new artistic medium.

In a world filled with dramas about dragons, detectives, or deep philosophical turmoil, Leonard and Hungry Paul stands apart, traveling at a more leisurely pace, guided by compassion, the weighty silence of small moments, and the occasional game of backgammon. Chaplin noted that these heroes don’t always make a loud noise – sometimes, they know when to be still and patient.

As a dedicated fan, I couldn’t help but express my excitement over Eddie Doyle’s announcement about our upcoming series. He described it as something truly exceptional, brimming with warmth and poignant instances that beautifully capture the essence of everyday life. With an exceptional cast breathing life into this critically acclaimed novel, it promises to be a thrilling addition to BBC Northern Ireland’s lineup for the year.

The logline for the novel “Leonard and Hungry Paul” describes a tale about two friends who, at first glance, might go unnoticed. However, it reveals their worth and uniqueness, suggesting that there’s wisdom to be gained from those we often overlook in life.

Unlike most people, Leonard and Hungry Paul don’t attempt to transform the world through exertion and power. Instead, they make a difference by identifying their unique skills, excelling at these tasks, and generously sharing them with others.

Besides being labeled “exquisite” by one reader, Leonard and Hungry Paul also received praise from others for its uplifting quality. One individual even referred to the novel as a “pleasant, engaging read” that was filled with subtle humor and endearing characters.

Leonard and Hungry Paul currently has no release date.

The debut print issue of Digital Spy’s magazine, titled “British Comedy Legends,” is available! You can purchase it from your local newsstand or online for only £3.99.
