BBC issues apology statement after criticism of Kate Middleton coverage: Here’s what happened

The BBC has apologized for mistakes made during its coverage of Armistice Day last week. The errors included referring to Catherine, Princess of Wales, by her maiden name, Kate Middleton. The BBC acknowledged the mistakes occurred during the live broadcast commemorating the end of World War I.

While many people still know her as Kate Middleton, the name she used when she first became well-known, she’s officially been known as Catherine, Princess of Wales, since King Charles III became king in 2022.

Okay, so I was watching the BBC coverage of the service at the National Memorial Arboretum – it was just after 11am – and it really bugged me that the newsreader, Rajini Vaidyanathan, kept calling Catherine ‘Kate Middleton’. Like, we all know who she is, and she’s clearly Princess of Wales now, so it felt a bit off to keep using her maiden name.

Viewers quickly noticed and shared the errors related to Kate on social media.

The BBC stated that they received feedback from viewers who were concerned that they didn’t consistently refer to the Princess of Wales by her proper title while reporting on Armistice Day.

We mistakenly called Catherine, Princess of Wales, by her maiden name, Kate Middleton, while covering Armistice Day memorials. This happened during several hours of live broadcasting, and we sincerely apologize for the errors.

In all of our reporting on Armistice Day, we made sure to use Catherine’s proper title.

Since marrying Prince William in 2011, Catherine hasn’t used her birth name, Middleton. She became known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, instead.

The nickname “Kate” largely originated with the media, though Prince William has occasionally used it when speaking to reporters. Prince Harry used the name frequently in his memoir, The Spare, revealing that some family members wished Kate would choose either “Kate” or “Katherine” as her official name, as both Charles and Camilla’s names begin with the letter “C”.

Newsweek reported that news organizations, both in the UK and around the world, frequently continue to feature Kate Middleton because people recognize her and it helps them attract online searches.

People are searching for ‘Kate Middleton’ far more often than ‘Princess Catherine’. ‘Princess Kate’ is also a popular search term.
