The new BBC series Lord of the Flies premieres tonight after much anticipation. This adaptation of William Golding’s famous 1954 novel has already received positive reviews from critics.
This four-episode series, from writer Jack Thorne, tells the story of a group of boys who find themselves stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. As they try to survive, they begin to compete for control.
The new series, directed by Marc Munden and featuring music by Hans Zimmer, starts tonight at 9pm on BBC One. You can also watch it right now on BBC iPlayer if you don’t want to wait!

The BBC series has been well-received by critics, who have largely agreed it’s a successful adaptation of Golding’s novel. In a four-star review, Digital Spy specifically praised the way the series’ creator, Thorne, brought modern issues into the story.
We found that this version of the story really shines when it examines what it means to be a boy. Similar to the themes in Adolescence, the characters deal with feelings of loneliness and anger by turning to hate, and the consequences of that go beyond what happens on the island itself.
This series is particularly impressive when Thorne builds upon the original story, offering a fresh, modern take. It’s also exceptionally well-written, making it a great way to experience a classic work of literature.
The Standard also highly praised the film, describing it as ‘visually rich.’ They noted that the unsettling feeling of something evil lurking on the island was reflected in the striking visuals, which often used intense colors like blood-red plants or a strange, green light on the boys.
Similarly, The Telegraph highly praised the show, calling it a perfect adaptation and highlighting the excellent directing and wonderful performances from the young actors.
