BBC confirms return of “gnarly” Scotland-set mystery drama as Line of Duty star joins cast
The popular BBC murder mystery series, “Shetland,” is set to appear on our screens again later in the year, since production for season 10 has begun.
In the upcoming series, Ashley Jensen is set to take on the character of DI Ruth Calder once more, this time alongside Alison O’Donnell portraying DI ‘Tosh’ MacIntosh. This six-part production will be shot on location in Scotland and the Shetland Islands, much like its previous installments.
Kicking off the filming process, the two actors stood for a picture with a clapperboard labeled “Shetland 10”. Additionally, the broadcaster revealed thrilling news about fresh cast members joining the upcoming season, including talented individuals from the series “Amandaland“, “Vera“, and “Line of Duty“.

Actor Samuel Anderson, known for his roles in “Gavin and Stacey,” will be reoccurring in the new role of Procurator Fiscal Matt Blake. Notable guest stars joining the cast include Clive Russell from “The Witcher” and “Game of Thrones,” Greg McHugh from “Fresh Meat,” and Ellie Haddington from “Motherland.
In the upcoming scenes, you might notice Niall MacGregor, famously portraying Richard Akers in the second season of “Line of Duty,” and Stephen McMillan, a familiar face from “Boiling Point” who recently appeared in “Toxic Town” on Netflix.
In the upcoming season of “Shetland,” inspired by the popular crime novels penned by Ann Cleeves, the narrative revolves around the ominous murder of an old resident in the secluded village of Lunniswick. Detectives Calder and Tosh are tasked with solving this chilling case.
The official show summary hints that it’s revealed, after some time, that the former social worker’s corpse was exposed to the weather for several days.
Tosh and Calder will delve into the victim’s life, exploring both her past and present, as well as the lives of those who were acquainted with her. As they dig deeper, they start to unearth hidden secrets and heinous actions within this tightly-knit community.
Joining Jensen and O’Donnell once again are Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson, Lewis Howden playing Sgt Billy McCabe, Anne Kidd portraying pathologist Cora McLean, Angus Miller taking on the role of Donnie, Tosh’s partner, Conor McCarry as PC Alex Grant, and Eubha Akilade as PC Lorna Burns.
In this version, I aimed to use more natural, conversational language to describe the actors reprising their roles in a TV show or movie.
Filming for the tenth season of Shetland will carry on throughout the upcoming months, as confirmed by the BBC, who anticipate its broadcast on television towards the end of this year.
You can currently stream seasons 1 through 9 of Shetland on BBC iPlayer. The tenth season is set to air on BBC One in the latter part of this year.
