BBC confirms new Motherland spin-off with cast announcement

The BBC has confirmed Amandaland is officially coming to screens in 2025.

In February, a fresh spin-off of the series “Motherland” called “Motherland: Amanda’s Story” will air on both BBC One and iPlayer. This new series focuses on character Amanda, played by Lucy Punch, and consists of six half-hour episodes.

In addition, the broadcaster disclosed additional information about the cast for the program, featuring Derry Girls’ actress Siobhan McSweeney and Rochenda Sandall from Line of Duty.

Additional cast members joining include Samuel Anderson, who once again took on the role of Fingers in the 2024 edition of the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special. Also part of the ensemble are Peter Serafinowicz and Ekow Quartey, notable for their work in Trying and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban respectively.

As a gamer, I leap into the new game, where I encounter Joanna Lumley, famously known for her role as Felicity, the anxious mom of one character named Amanda. Additionally, I meet Philippa Dunne, portraying Anne Flynn, a protective mother figure in this engaging virtual world.

In the upcoming series, we’ll trace the journey of Amanda, a woman navigating single parenthood after divorce, as she guides Manus and Georgie, now adolescents in secondary school, through contemporary challenges such as underage drinking, deceptive social media profiles, and environmental worry.

Despite moving to South Harlesden and reducing her living space, Felicity (Lumley) continues to be a regular presence. She offers comments that are seemingly positive but also critical, as well as subtle jabs about her new neighborhood.

Regarding Anne (Dunne), after a short break from being controlled by Amanda, she has once again found herself in the role of assistant, managing social interactions among the parents at their children’s new school.

Speaking about her feelings, Sharon Horgan, the co-creator of ‘Bad Sisters’, admitted she felt deeply sad when it was time to part ways with the series. There’s an immense affection for the show and its characters that has developed over time.

It was truly exciting to continue the journey with Amanda and Anne, along with the addition of Felicity. The actors playing Lucy, Phillipa, and Joanna have really established themselves, and they’re joined by a hilarious and gifted group of newcomers in this series.

I can hardly contain my excitement to present the upcoming aspects of parenthood, as well as the unique camaraderie that blossoms at school entrances.

Amandaland will be released in February on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

All three series of Motherland are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
