BBC breaks silence after Paralympian Will Bayley said Janette Manrara made him redo ‘rubbish jump’ that caused lifelong injury on Strictly

He had to quit prematurely during the table jump rehearsals as his leg snapped upon his second try, following Janette’s criticism of his initial attempt being poorly executed.
During that year’s live shows, a previously unearthed video clip was played, capturing the heart-wrenching scene of Will writhing in pain on the floor after his unfortunate jump.
In the video, Tess shared that Will was hurt and unable to dance for that particular week, as it transitioned to footage of Will on the ground, groaning in pain while a medical professional provided assistance.

An athlete, born with a condition called arthrogryposis that restricts the flexibility of his joints, managed to execute the move while keeping his knees fully extended.
Remembering the excruciating agony that overtook him as he fell to the ground, the gold medalist conceded that he believed his entire career had come to an end.
In an interview with The Sun, Will shared: “We tried out the jump a couple of times, and I took great precautions. But then Janette pointed out that my attempt was lackluster, and she encouraged me to put on a bigger smile, take more risks, and display some enthusiasm.”
Determined to improve, the sportsman ‘went for it’ but experienced ‘the most horrific pain.’
He narrated how he lay helplessly on the floor, believing his professional journey had reached its end. Suddenly, he felt and heard a painful snap in his leg, and found it difficult to draw breath.
Living with a chronic injury is like carrying a heavy burden that never goes away. Every day, I am reminded of it as soon as I open my eyes and feel the pain. It’s not just another injury that will heal given time; it’s a lifelong companion. And to make matters worse, I already had a disability before this injury came along.
Will clarified that he didn’t have any personal disagreements with Janette, yet he believed she was experiencing excessive pressure from the show’s producers. Their friendship has endured since their tenure on the program.

A representative from the BBC stated: “We won’t be discussing specific individuals or participating in rumors. But, as we’ve mentioned before, we’re open to hearing concerns if they’re brought to our attention directly. We have established protocols for handling such matters.”
During the unfortunate incident when Will got hurt, he commended Janette for being as steady and unyielding as a rock once their extraordinary dance came to a close, causing her to shed tears.
As he heard his knee make a popping sound, he believed he had shattered his leg, but it was only after consulting a doctor that he learned he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament instead.
At the show, Will expressed his disappointment but excitement, sharing, “I’m really bummed, yet thrilled to be present and cheer for everyone. They’re all putting on an amazing performance tonight.”
