BBC Breakfast star shares emotional statement as “fearless” co-star quits
Jon Kay, a prominent figure on BBC Breakfast, penned a heartfelt farewell to his colleague Nina Warhurst following her decision to step down from the program.
After spending seven years on an early morning program, Warhurst has announced her transition to presenting the BBC’s midday news, specifically the “News at One”.
In 2022, Kay, my co-host at BBC Breakfast, began regularly presenting alongside me. He posted several photos on Instagram featuring himself and Warhurst in the studio, one of which was a smiling picture taken on the red couch with Sally Nugent.

Other pics show Sally manning a camera, and smiling while holding a huge bouquet of flowers.
Today marked the end of Nina’s tenure at the Money & Work job on Breakfast, as she prepares to embark on a new challenge: presenting the BBC One O’Clock News. However, this is not a goodbye, but rather a change in roles for her.
She will continue to work from Salford, alongside her current team in the same studio. Occasionally, you’ll still see her hosting “Breakfast” with us. And rest assured, she’ll always remain our friend.
“But I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to work with her since I joined Brekkie.”
He described Nina as one of the most skilled, devoted, adaptable, lively, and courageous individuals he has encountered. Furthermore, he emphasized that she fully dedicates herself to any story or topic she reports on. She consistently prioritizes her audience’s needs. What makes her even more remarkable is that she remains just as genuine off-camera as she appears on the couch.
Though we’ll surely miss her bright energy and cheerful smiles at 4:45 am, we’re all thrilled for her that she can now enjoy some extra sleep in the mornings, as well as spending more time with her lovely family. She’s going to shine even brighter during lunchtime!
Warhurst responded in the comments, saying: “John, you moved me to tears!! Thank you so very much xxx And it was so thoughtful of @teddysphotos to take the time to compose a song for this significant occasion ❤️❤️❤️.
The host recently shared on Instagram that she’s stepping away from the program, having decided to take a break, with plans to contribute to the BBC’s News at One instead: “For now, I’ll be putting aside my safety vest and wig as I take some time off.
I was in my advanced stages of pregnancy, feeling quite anxious yet incredibly thrilled, when I received an opportunity to work a few shifts on the esteemed morning program at BBC Breakfast, represented by @bbcbreakfast.
The position became permanent after the end of the lockdown, leaving us to ponder about rebuilding and finding ways to recover and carry on living.

As a teen aspiring for a career in journalism, it never crossed my mind that so many possibilities would be just a stone’s throw away from where I lived in Salford.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled about the fantastic midday gaming program my London counterparts have crafted. I can hardly wait to join forces with our outstanding team, moving this gem of a project to new heights!
BBC Breakfast airs every day from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
