BBC boss Tim Davie REFUSES to back MasterChef’s John Torode – as he makes clear he ‘expects action to be taken’ following racism row
As the BBC Director General, Tim Davie, has declined to support John Torode in his role on MasterChef, instead indicating that appropriate actions should be taken, as he clearly expects.
The head of the BBC assured that the cooking program will continue to reside within the organization for an extended period, emphasizing that the show surpasses the personalities who host it.
However, Davie stated that he hadn’t finalized his choice about airing the series that Gregg Wallace and John Torode have previously recorded.
Last night, Torode disclosed that an investigation into his previous work partner, Gregg Wallace, found evidence supporting allegations of the use of racially insensitive language by him.
Inquired during the unveiling of the BBC’s yearly report, Davie commented: ‘I believe it’s important to take further action.’
In essence, if an individual fails to align with our values at Banjay (the independent company in question), the BBC expects them to take appropriate measures and subsequently inform us about the actions taken.
‘These are not BBC employees, but we absolutely expect action to be taken.’
‘I’m unable to offer my thoughts on this matter, but I trust you understand that it’s best for each conversation individually. Discussing such topics within the context of the series could be seen as inappropriate or unfair to all parties involved.’
However, the Director General endorsed the MasterChef series, stating its continuation on BBC past the year 2028 is guaranteed.

Davie expressed: “I firmly believe its future on BBC extends beyond 2028. I think a beloved program transcends individual personalities. It certainly has the ability to thrive and flourish, but it’s crucial that we align with the show’s cultural context.
Additionally, the head of the BBC announced they haven’t decided on the future of the MasterChef series filmed in the Fall with hosts Gregg Wallace and Torode who were previously let go.
He said: ‘In terms of the series [that is already filmed], I think this is a difficult decision. ‘
Let’s carefully consider our decision and thoroughly ponder over the situation. As the editor-in-charge, I find it crucial to acknowledge the dedication and passion of the aspiring chefs who poured their hearts into this project, and we must take their efforts into account.
In simpler terms, ‘First, engage in discussions with the relevant people, consider their views, and finally take action based on our audience. That’s essentially what we’re doing right now – following this process.’
‘I haven’t decided yet if we will do it or not. Let’s explore the options first, and once we’ve gone through that, we can easily decide.’
Today, it has been reported that Torode has been accused of various instances of inappropriate behavior. However, only one accusation – that he utilized racist language on one occasion – has been substantiated.

A reliable confidant reported that, following the shoot, the 59-year-old individual was said to be engaging in a conversation over drinks where he apparently employed a racially offensive remark.
The witness asserted that Torode immediately expressed his apologies, showing deep regret, and he emphasized that he did not intend to use the term in a derogatory manner.
At the time, no one voiced any complaints, but later, during Wallace’s investigation, it was mentioned that the incident had been raised as an issue. The source confirmed this.
Reports indicate that BBC and production company Banijay requested chef Torode’s resignation last week due to an alleged incident, however, he declined their request.
