The BBC has announced a new ’80s-set spy thriller with an interesting twist.

In the heat of the Cold War, I find myself entangled in a complex web of intrigue. I’m an MI6 agent, juggling loyalties between not one but two alluring intelligence operatives – one from the Stasi, the other from the CIA. It’s a dangerous game, and every move could mean life or death.

The six-episode series, characterized as both playful and risky with a hint of dark humor, was developed by Emma Moran from Extraordinary, and is brought to you by Sid Gentle Films Ltd, the same team responsible for Killing Eve.

The upcoming BBC One series introduces us to Marta, a secret MI6 operative in 1982 East Berlin, skillfully navigating her way undercover while dodging the keen eyes of Friedrich Bauman, the recently appointed chief of Counter Intelligence for the Stasi.

In this situation, Marta finds herself stuck between Friedrich and the confident, yet impulsive CIA agent, Aaron Neeland, who happens to be very attractive. This unexpected triangular relationship during the Cold War has left her torn by her feelings.

The possibility of being strangled or imprisoned pales in comparison to the harrowing experience of falling in love, as the text implies. Exposing oneself emotionally and baring one’s heart and soul? That’s something she’d prefer not to do, equivalent to having her fingernails pulled out.
