The BBC has announced two new drama shows that are set to replace Doctors.
2023 saw a contentious cancellation of the soap, with the BBC attributing it to financial difficulties they faced at that point. The final episode was broadcast in November of the previous year.
Now, it’s officially confirmed that two new series are set to emerge from the West Midlands hub of “Doctors”. These shows are titled “The Detection Club” and “The Hairdresser Mysteries“.

In the 1930s London, a group consisting of notable crime authors such as Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and GK Chesterton combine their detective skills to unravel murder mysteries together.
Simultaneously, the television series titled “The Hairdresser Mysteries” revolves around Lily Petal, a renowned hairdresser, who opts for a change and moves from the bustling city life to purchase a quaint hairdressing salon in a tranquil village. According to the broadcaster’s announcement, the shows are a reflection of BBC’s dedication to reinvesting all funds from ‘Doctors’ into fresh scripted television content in the West Midlands region.
Helen Munson, the commissioning editor for daytime programming, noted that the West Midlands is brimming with local talent in the drama industry, both on-screen and behind the scenes. By greenlighting shows like ‘The Detection Club’ and ‘The Hairdresser Mysteries,’ more job opportunities will be created in the region and these productions will serve to highlight the exceptional talents and offerings of the area.
I’m thrilled to be part of crafting these intriguing crime narratives, which can captivate viewers of all age groups and offer enjoyable viewing at any hour.

After the cancellation of the series, fans launched a petition following the lead of the doctors, aiming to preserve it. Meanwhile, certain unions showed apprehension regarding its termination.
At the time, the BBC clarified that due to their fixed license fee and funding constraints, they would need to make difficult decisions to offer more value to viewers by enhancing their services.
Our dedication to the West Midlands continues unwaveringly. The funds initially allocated for doctors will now be directed towards developing fresh initiatives within this region instead.
