BBC acquires ‘riveting’ psychological thriller based on “twisting crime” story – with exciting cast

The BBC has acquired a new Australian psychological thriller adapted from a novel. Called Treasure & Dirt, the series follows two detectives as they investigate a disturbing murder in the desert.

The broadcaster has announced it will air the new six-episode series on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, though a specific release date hasn’t been set yet.

Featuring Michael Dorman from For All Mankind and Liv Hewson of Yellowjackets, Treasure & Dirt takes place in a struggling opal mining town in the desert. The story begins when a miner is discovered headless and decaying deep within his own mine.

Ivan Lucic, a homicide detective working in the city, is partnered with Nell Buchanan, a rural detective, to investigate the case. Buchanan understands the area and its impact on the people who live there.

The story follows them as they become entangled in a complex web of secrets, driven by greed and the resurfacing of past wrongdoings.

This series is adapted from Chris Hammer’s suspenseful crime novel, first released in 2021, and written for television by Matt Cameron, who also worked on The Clearing.

You might recognize some of the other actors in this show too! Sarah Peirse, who was amazing in The Twelve, is here, along with Thomas M. Wright from The Stranger. Mark Mitchinson, who I loved in Uproar, and Eamon Farren, who I remember as a standout in The Witcher, are both in it as well. It’s a seriously talented cast!

Sue Deeks, head of scripted acquisitions at the BBC, described Treasure & Dirt as a gripping psychological thriller. She highlighted its immersive atmosphere and complex mystery, noting that the harsh, isolated setting adds to the difficulties faced by the team investigating the crime.

Ian Collie and Rob Gibson, the show’s executive producers, described it as a thrilling and captivating series. They’re excited for viewers in Australia and worldwide to be introduced to Detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan, the intriguing residents of Nulla, and the stunning landscapes of South Australia, including the deserts and the one-of-a-kind underground tunnels of Coober Pedy.

The BBC has recently acquired another Australian series in addition to Treasure & Dirt. They’ve also announced that the detective drama Dustfall will be broadcast on BBC One.

Featuring Anna Torv from Mindhunter, the show centers around an experienced detective who goes back to her hometown and investigates a series of drink spiking incidents. The investigation takes a dramatic turn when one of the prime suspects is found murdered.

Treasure & Dirt will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can find Ariana & Witches at all good newsagents or online for only £8.99.
