BBC acquires “remarkable” Denmark-set drama deemed to be “beautifully constructed”
The BBC has acquired a “remarkable” new Danish drama.
The film titled “Families Like Ours,” penned by Thomas Vinterberg (of “Another Round”) and Bo Hr Hansen (of “The Art of Crying”), is based in a future Denmark that faces mandatory evacuation due to escalating water levels, leading to significant societal upheaval.
The BBC has unveiled that the seven-episode series will be broadcast in the United Kingdom on both BBC Four and BBC iPlayer, following its debut in its native land towards the end of last year.
The show chronicles individuals in Denmark, experiencing goodbyes to their cherished belongings, familiar surroundings, and personal identities amidst an evacuation. Gradually yet persistently, everything around them undergoes transformation.
As wealth diminishes and fortune shifts, some find favor in their circumstances, often venturing to prosperous lands, leaving behind those who struggle and rely on government-assisted migration to difficult locations.
The summary mentions that families, friends, and dear ones are apart. Some succumb to hostility and discord, whereas others cultivate affection and initiate fresh starts.
Amidst this setting, we meet Laura, a senior high school student experiencing her first love as she stands on the brink of graduation.
When word of the evacuation spreads, it alters Laura and her family’s life trajectories irrevocably. In this challenging predicament, Laura finds herself torn between the three individuals she holds dearest.
Our family-like series, “Families Like Ours,” has garnered significant praise. It’s been hailed as “extraordinary” by Espinof, a title that promises it will captivate admirers of Vinterberg’s work.
Clear and Loud emphasized that the program offers a straightforward concept, which is essential for residents of affluent nations to truly grasp the complexity of the refugee predicament.
In the meantime, Sue Deeks, who heads BBC Programme Acquisition, commented that the series is a skillfully crafted, thought-provoking drama which explores the human response when faced with the unimaginable, compelling characters to grapple with decisions that seem beyond their reach.
As a passionate gamer, let me share my excitement: “I’ve always had a strong bond with the UK, and you’ll notice that connection in our upcoming series. So, I can hardly contain my eagerness to see how viewers will respond to Families Like Ours. I am deeply grateful to the BBC for bringing this story to a nation that feels like home to me.
The BBC Four television network and the BBC iPlayer streaming service are set to broadcast our family’s story; however, the exact release date remains undisclosed at this time.
