BBC acquires new Irish drama with Death in Paradise writer attached
As a fan who has spent countless hours engrossed in the witty, warm, and relatable world of Marian Keyes’ Walsh Sisters, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of excitement at the news that this beloved series is coming to life on our screens! Having grown up with these characters, sharing their triumphs, tribulations, and the occasional tear-jerking moment, it feels like a dream come true.
The BBC is bringing a new Irish drama to audiences, titled The Walsh Sisters.
According to Marian Keyes’ popular book series, “The Walsh Sisters” is portrayed as a fast-paced, candid, and uproariously humorous exploration of the authentic experiences of being an Irish sister.
The TV show, based in Dublin, will delve into the experiences of sisters Anna, Rachel, Maggie, Claire, and Helen Walsh, as they journey through the ups and downs of their later twenties and thirties.
This group is brimming with private jokes, lingering grudges, and healed-yet-tender scars. Yet, their genetic link, deep-rooted history, and mutual affection for power ballads hold the Walsh sisters close during trials of heartache, sorrow, dependency, and parenthood.
Stefanie Preissner is responsible for transforming Keyes’ novels into a series of four episodes, while Kefi Chadwick, known for writing shows like “Death in Paradise” and “Rivals”, contributes by penning two episodes. Ian FitzGibbon oversees the directorial aspects.
At the moment, specifics like who will be featured in the show and its broadcast date are yet to be decided.
Expressing her immense joy about her books being turned into movies, Keyes exclaimed: “This is absolutely thrilling!!! I can hardly contain myself! The scripts are wonderful; they’ve truly captured the essence of my books. It’s been such a struggle to keep this under wraps, and it feels fantastic knowing that the secret is now revealed to the world.
Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, commented: “For decades, The Walsh Sisters novels have brought joy to countless readers. We’re thrilled that this talented group is going to animate the clever, heartwarming, and remarkably relatable characters from these books.
In 1995, the Walsh Sisters series by Keyes began with ‘Watermelon’, a story centered around Claire Walsh as she experiences a significant life shift. This was then followed by ‘Rachel’s Holiday’ in 1997, ‘Angels’ in 2002, ‘Anybody Out There?’ in 2006 and ‘The Mystery of Mercy Close’ in 2012.
The Walsh Sisters doesn’t have a release date yet.
