BBC acquires “gripping” and “high-stakes” police drama The Black Forest Murders
The BBC has obtained the rights to broadcast the German police series “The Black Forest Murders” on BBC Four and its online streaming platform, iPlayer.
Originally titled “Spuren“, this mini-series consisting of four 45-minute episodes made its debut in Germany as far back as February.
The series draws inspiration from two actual incidents that occurred in 2016, as well as the non-fiction book “SOKO Erle,” primarily revolving around an in-depth examination of a murder case where a woman was brutally beaten to death.

Barbara Kramer (Nina Kunzendorf) and Thomas Riedle (Tilman Strauß) come together to establish a substantial investigation team regarding the case at hand. However, their progress is hindered when an additional murder occurs, potentially linked to the first, and striking similarities arise with a previous case in Austria.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t wait to dive into “The Black Forest Murders”, an authentic and gripping crime series that follows the tireless efforts of a detail-oriented investigation squad.
Besides keeping viewers on the edge of their seats with its intriguing murder plotline, this series also delves deep into the difficulties faced when tackling intricate criminal cases. It explores the emotional strain that comes with handling such intense probes.”
“Not only is it a thrilling murder mystery, but the show also sheds light on the hardships of resolving complex crimes and the mental strain experienced by those engaged in these high-pressure investigations.
When the series debuted in Germany, local critics commended it for stripping away typical crime drama tropes and instead delving deep into the intricate details of the investigation. They appreciated the focus on the investigative process rather than the personal lives of the detectives (although a few pointed out that this meticulous approach could appear “dry” to certain viewers).
On iPlayer, a heartbreakingly beautiful show titled “Reunion,” produced by the team behind “Adolescence,” has recently been added to the lineup. Meanwhile, the first season of the critically acclaimed Australian drama “The Newsreader” will be departing from the service in a week.
The murder mysteries set in the Black Forest are yet to be scheduled for broadcast on BBC Four and streaming on BBC iPlayer, but they have already aired on Das Erste in Germany.
