Batman’s Perfect DCU Suit Design Already Exists – And It’s Time James Gunn Took Notice

There’s already a great design for Batman in the new DC Universe (DCU), and James Gunn and his team at DC Studios should consider it. Gunn has been developing this unique version of Batman for a while, and it’s expected to be distinct from the darker take currently being explored in Matt Reeves’ The Batman films, which will eventually connect to the upcoming The Brave and the Bold movie.

Since revealing the character in January 2023, James Gunn has shared some details about the new Batman. This version of the iconic hero will be older than we’ve typically seen, and for the first time in a movie, he’ll be a father. The film will show him mentoring his son, Damian Wayne, who is also a crime fighter known as Robin.

As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following all the buzz about the new Batman suit for the DCU, and it’s been a big topic of conversation! James Gunn has hinted that it’ll be a bit different than what we’re used to – he’s said it’ll pull directly from the comics, with things like white eyes, a yellow bat symbol, and blue and grey coloring instead of the usual all-black look. But honestly, he’s kept the full reveal under wraps, and we’re all still waiting to see the final design!

The DCU Batman Costume Should Borrow From the Arkham Franchise

For the DCU Batman suit, James Gunn should take a page from Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham franchise.

Recent Batman movie costumes, particularly Robert Pattinson’s in The Batman, have been very realistic. Now, James Gunn seems to be aiming for a look that’s closer to the classic comic book version of Batman for the new DC Universe. This preference is already visible in the DCU costumes that have been revealed so far.

As a huge comic book fan, I was really excited to see how faithfully they brought some of these characters to life in the movie. Superman’s suit was covered in that iconic ‘Kingdom Come’ symbol – it was a fantastic detail! And Hawkgirl looked exactly like she did in the comics, complete with her helmet and mace. Even Mister Terrific felt pulled straight from the page with his leather jacket and that cool T-shaped mask. It was a visual treat for us longtime devotees!

While DC Studios hasn’t officially announced their costume plans, a close look suggests they’re aiming for designs that are very faithful to the comics, but with a slightly realistic edge. This approach is similar to what Rocksteady successfully achieved with the Batman suit in the Arkham games.

The Batman costume from Arkham brilliantly blends the character’s classic comic book look with a sense of realism. It includes the iconic gold utility belt, black shorts, and long, pointed ears, but appears to be crafted from practical materials like Kevlar and leather.

Fans consistently praise the Arkham games for beautifully recreating the look and feel of Batman: The Animated Series, almost as if it were brought to life with realistic graphics. This was especially exciting because the original voice actors, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, reprised their iconic roles as Batman and the Joker.

It seems Gunn and his team are aiming for a Batman that feels truly dynamic and realistic, almost as if pulled straight from the comic books.

DC Studios could choose to make the new Batman suit even more like the comics, perhaps by including details fans want, such as a yellow Bat logo or white lenses on the cowl. But the suit from the Arkham video game series is a strong starting point for the new design.

When Will the DCU Batman Debut On-Screen?

It’s been almost three years since James Gunn first talked about his plans for Batman in the DC Universe, and fans are still waiting to find out when the character will officially appear in the connected series of movies and shows.

Batman actually made a brief appearance in the new franchise already, with a quick cameo in Season 1 of Creature Commandos that was easy to miss.

Fans hoped to see the character make at least a brief appearance in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film after he was left out of the 2025 Superman movie. However, recent reports suggest that won’t happen. While Batman will be referenced in the 2027 DCU film, he won’t actually appear on screen.

It’s probable that this character won’t appear on screen until his dedicated movie, The Brave and the Bold, is released. Unfortunately, that film seems quite a ways off, as the script was still being written the last time fans received an update.

Considering The Batman 2 is coming out next year and we haven’t heard much about The Brave and the Bold, it’s likely we won’t see the new DC Studios Batman until 2028, and possibly even later than that.
