Batman: James Gunn Reacts to Fans Wanting Sam Raimi to Direct DC Movie

James Gunn is aware that Sam Raimi wants to direct a Batman movie.

Sam Raimi has directed several superhero films, including classics like Darkman (1990) and the Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007), as well as the recent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). This weekend, his new horror movie, Send Help, will be released in US theaters.

Sam Raimi recently told MovieWeb that he once attempted to direct a Batman film, but the project didn’t move forward.

I’m a big fan of Batman and The Shadow, and I’ve even tried to develop films based on them, but I couldn’t secure the rights. Superman has always been a favorite of mine too. There are so many great DC characters, and what it really takes is a creative story that stays true to who those characters are and respects their established universe. It needs to deliver on what fans love about them, highlight their best moments, and give them fitting challenges. If a story has a genuine, compelling journey for the hero, then I’d be eager to bring it to the screen.

What did James Gunn say about a Sam Raimi Batman movie?

After Sam Raimi, the director of several Spider-Man films, mentioned his interest in directing a Batman movie, DC fans have begun urging James Gunn to make it happen. One fan repeatedly commented on Gunn’s Instagram post, pointing out Raimi’s statement: “Sam Raimi said he wants to make a Batman movie.”

Gunn eventually responded, “Doesn’t mean you have to spam.”

It’s still uncertain if these projects will move forward, but currently, Andy Muschietti is set to direct a Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold for the DC Universe. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves is scheduled to release The Batman II in 2027.
