Batman Beyond Is Coming Back But Not How Fans Hoped

As a dedicated fan, I can attest that even after being absent from our screens for more than two decades, Batman Beyond remains one of the most beloved alternate DC Comics universes. Admittedly, there’s been a sense of longing among fans for a continuation of the animated series, given the unfortunate passing of Kevin Conroy and Will Friedle’s apparent disinterest. However, it seems that our wishes may finally come true as Terry McGinnis’ story is set to continue in a comic book miniseries. What’s more exciting is that Static Shock, another fan-favorite series, is also making a comeback, enriching the narrative even further.

The six-issue series titled Batman/Static: Beyond is set to debut under the DC Elseworlds imprint, with Evan Narcisse, renowned for his work on Spider-Man video games, penning the script. Meanwhile, Nikolas Draper-Ivey, artist behind Static: Season One (2021) and Static: Shadows of Dakota (2023), will be responsible for the artwork.

Batman/Static Beyond teams the heroes to save Earth

The story of Batman/Static Beyond begins with Virgil Hawkins leading a groundbreaking technological advancement, introducing a novel energy system that prepares Earth for integration into a potent alien association known as The Cooperative. However, this promising future is threatened when a malevolent force initiates a worldwide power outage. With the Justice League preoccupied, it becomes the responsibility of the seasoned Static and Batman Beyond to rescue the planet.

Narcisse finds the most captivating part of the comic to be witnessing Virgil’s evolution into a mentor figure. Essentially, Virgil was once a young superhero who grew up to shoulder more responsibility for his city and beyond. Meanwhile, Terry is still in the process of learning how to assume such responsibilities in his unique manner.

Speaking as a fan, Narcisse mentioned that the upcoming series will delve into the tension between two protagonists, each grappling with unique legacies and life experiences. As a high school student, I find myself carrying the burden of the Batman legacy and the expectations that come along with it. Conversely, Virgil, being an adult member of the Justice League, is navigating his journey from a different perspective. His upbringing in Dakota, where systemic injustice shaped the very essence of living there, fuels his desire to create a safer, fairer world. Although our methods differ significantly, we both share the common goal of making the world a better place.

Batman/Static Beyond #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on November 12, 2025.
