Iconic cinematographer Roger Pratt has died aged 77.

In December, a well-known British actor, who had been nominated for an Oscar back in 1999, sadly passed away. This week, the British Society of Cinematographers officially confirmed his passing.

His cause and date of death has not been revealed at this time.

Pratt’s significant collection spans movies like Batman from 1989, Frankenstein in 1994, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets released in 2002, Troy in 2004, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from 2005, Inkheart in 2008, and The Karate Kid rebooted in 2010.

The outstanding work he did was recognized with a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Oscars for “The End of the Affair”. This film featured the acting talents of Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore.

Additionally, he received BAFTA nominations in 1999 and 2000 for his roles in “The End of the Affair” and “Chocolat,” two films that featured Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

They often worked together, the duo being none other than the iconic Terry Gilliam from Monty Python, and the initial encounter took place during the filming of Monty Python and the Holy Grail in 1975.

The BSC memorial stated: ‘Born to a parish vicar, he found his career path deviating from the church, as 16mm documentaries blending fact and faith resonated more with him.’

Roger later contributed to several iconic films directed by Gilliam, including ‘Brazil’ in 1985, ‘The Fisher King’ in 1991, and ’12 Monkeys’ in 1995.

‘Our thoughts go out to his family at this time.’

Pratt, the son of a vicar grew up in the Midlands and attended Loughborough Grammar School.

His initial encounter with films took place when he watched religious movies in church. In awe, the actor later recounted: ‘A container filled with rolls of film, projectors, screens, speakers. The lights dim, the humming of machinery…then real people speaking, acting, laughing, and depicting death (since they were about Christ’s crucifixion).’

In 1966, he attended Durham University and completed his General Arts program in 1969. Subsequently, he joined the London Film School.

Regularly collaborated with director Lord Richard Attenborough, contributing his skills to the films Shadowlands (1993), In Love and War (1996), and Grey Owl (1999).

In 2023 Pratt was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the BSC.

During his acceptance speech, Billy Williams OBE BSC expressed his joy that Roger Pratt will receive the BSC Lifetime Achievement Award this year. By concentrating on the drama and storyline, he has crafted the visuals for countless memorable films. He extends his congratulations and warmest wishes to him.

In 1994, Kenneth Branagh, who played in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, stated: ‘An exceptional individual with a complete mastery of his craft, whom I’ve had the privilege to meet. I couldn’t have succeeded without your help. My affection and respect are boundless.’

Julianne Moore expressed her admiration by saying: “I simply had to let you know how fantastic your work was in ‘End of the Affair’. The lighting was incredibly nuanced and moving, and truthfully, I’ve never looked better than I did under your direction… If only I could make all my films with you!

Following our collaboration on The Fisher King in 1994 with Robin Williams, he penned a note in a book to me saying, “Roger, if you’ve got the flair, I’ve got the dialogue. Once more, thank you, you’re remarkable.
