Bass guitarist for iconic punk band Comeback Kid dies after short health battle
As a devoted fan, I’m deeply saddened to share that Matt Keil, once the talented bassist of Comeback Kid, has passed away after a tough, year-long fight against the relentless and incurable neurological disorder, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
From 2008 to 2004, Keil, aged 39 and hailing from Minnesota, was a member of a Canadian punk band. He appeared on two of their albums, titled ‘Symptoms + Cures’ and ‘Die Knowing’.
The father-of-two was diagnosed with the devastating neurological disorder on May 2, 2024.
ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, impairs the function of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to a gradual loss of muscle control. Regrettably, it is a condition with currently no known remedy, and it eventually proves fatal.
On social media, Comeback Kid shared a touching tribute to their late former bassist, who sadly passed away on Sunday.
With deep sadness, the band bids farewell to their long-standing companion and former bassist, Matt Keil.
He was an exceptional friend and musician; simply the best companion for tours, company, and adventures across the globe’s unexplored territories.
As a devoted admirer, I extend my heartfelt affection to Matt K’s beloved wife, Maddie, and their two precious daughters. May we forever cherish his memory in the years ahead. My love, Matt K.

Approximately half of those diagnosed with ALS typically live for about three years following the start of their symptoms; however, there are cases where individuals with ALS live much longer.
Over the course of time, a relatively uncommon and untreatable neurological disorder progressively affects the functionality of the nervous system, leading to progressive muscle weakness and eventual paralysis.
Upon learning about my predicament, my dear ones initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide for my spouse Maddie and our precious girls Ellie, aged 9, and Zoey, 7.
The fundraiser remarked that you might recognize Matt Keil as a devoted spouse who’s been married for 12 years to Maddie, or as a committed parent instead.
Apart from recognizing him as a thriving real estate agent, an enthusiastic musician, and a resident of the Twin Cities community, it’s also worth mentioning that Matt has touched your life in a special way. Regardless of how you have encountered him, it’s clear that he is one of the most compassionate, benevolent, amusing, and authentic individuals around.
Matt’s ultimate joy is to spend the remainder of his life cherishing time with his loved ones, visiting the lake in Wisconsin, playing golf, creating music with companions, encouraging his daughters at soccer and gymnastics, and sharing laughter over amusing films with the one he adores.

His wife released a heartbreaking tribute reflecting on their marriage after his passing.
With deep sadness, I must tell you that my beloved partner and dearest friend, who fought courageously for 19 months against ALS, passed away yesterday afternoon.
In our marriage, there was always harmony, sprinkled with endless laughter and happiness. He was not only a wonderful partner but also an exceptional parent and my personal source of humor. The void left by your departure will last throughout my remaining days. My affection for you is eternal.
