Based on a True Story season 2 ending explained: Who was the Copycat Killer?

As a die-hard fan of gripping crime dramas who’s seen more twists and turns than a pretzel factory, I can confidently say that Based on a True Story season 2 had me hooked from the very first episode. The way they kept us guessing about the Copycat Killer was nothing short of masterful storytelling!

In the second season, which was inspired by actual events, we were certainly taken on an exhilarating journey. Now, let’s dissect the finale to unravel the unexpected twists, turns, and provide answers to the questions that have been lingering in our minds.

Caution: This post contains major SPOILERS from Based on a True Story season 2

The second series resumed several months following the first, with Matt absent and discovered to be with Tory, Ava’s younger sibling. Meanwhile, Ava and Nathan were grappling with their roles as parents, finding solace in Drew (portrayed by Melissa Fumero), who helped Ava understand that striving for ‘the perfect mom’ is unattainable.

As a dedicated gamer, I found Drew to be quite the captivating figure in this thrilling game. For a moment, it seemed like she could be the elusive Copycat Killer we’d been hunting. But then came a twist – a double one, no less! This revelation unveiled something far more enticing than I could have ever imagined. It left me questioning, who was the real Copycat Killer? The intrigue just kept piling up.

Who was Drew in Based on a True Story season 2?

Initially portrayed as a detective and later as the Copycat Killer, it wasn’t until almost the end of the season that we uncovered the real truth. The character wasn’t named Drew; she was actually Olivia, Matt’s former wife. There were numerous hints dropped in conversations with Ava right from the start that pointed towards a connection to Matt.

Regrettably, Drew/Olivia didn’t manage to reach the finish line. It was uncovered that Drew had a shady past – she and Matt were involved in running scams and credit card fraud schemes. Thankfully, she wasn’t a murderer, nor did she have any connection to the Copycat Killer. However, it seemed Tory perceived her as a rival, leading him to take her life, an action that left everyone taken aback by Tory!

Who was the Copycat Killer?

In the end, who was revealed as the Copycat Killer? It transpired that it was none other than Paige, Chloe Lake’s sister. Fans may recall that Chloe was among Matt’s victims in Based on a True Story. Paige held a grudge against Ava and Nathan for exploiting Chloe’s death financially, and she sought to punish them for it.

Instead of leading Ava and Nathan to the Lipinski Sisters’ podcast studio with the intention of murdering them, she had actually planned to do so. But just as things were about to unfold, Matt arrived and unexpectedly knocked her unconscious, thus rescuing both Nathan and Ava. However, it turns out that this entire situation was a carefully orchestrated plan.

In another version of events, Matt successfully implicates Nathan as the Westside Ripper. As a result, Matt and Paige escape, letting Nathan shoulder all the blame. This scenario could potentially lead to complications for Nathan and Ava if Based on a True Story returns for its third season.

In a previous scene, Matt escorted Paige, and when we last observed them, Paige was bound and Matt seemed to be in need of speaking with her. If there’s a third season, this situation could get intriguing as it appears that vengeance-seeking Paige aims to expose the actual Westside Ripper, while Matt must maintain his cover, pretending that Nathan is responsible for the murders to protect himself.

Based on a True Story is available to stream on Peacock.
