Barry Keoghan’s Irish thriller confirms UK release date with first trailer

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in gritty, intense narratives and experienced the highs and lows of conflict and rivalry within virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for Barry Keoghan’s Irish thriller “Bring Them Down.” With my gaming experience as a backdrop, I find myself drawn to stories that delve deep into themes of conflict, tradition versus modernity, and the darker aspects of human nature.

Barry Keoghan’s Irish thriller, titled “Bring Them Down,” has set a release date in the UK for the following year and unveiled a short promotional video.

The film directed by Christopher Andrews tells the story of a solitary farm boy, who has strife with a competing family, leading to escalating hostilities.

The distributor, MUBI, has officially announced that the movie will premiere in UK and Irish theaters on February 7th, 2025.

Initially, the thrilling prelude focuses on Keoghan and fellow actor Christopher Abbott (portraying Michael), with Jack, played by Keoghan, being persuaded to commit a gruesome act against the enemy farmer’s livestock. In this case, Jack is the character portrayed by Saltburn star, Keoghan.

Jack states, “Just like an old saying goes… wherever you find livestock, you often find mortality too.” As we anticipate the ensuing chaos, it becomes clear that cars will be destroyed and guns, specifically shotguns, will be aimed at individuals.

In simpler terms, the story revolves around Michael, who is the only son of a farming family and lives a secluded life with his ill-tempered father Ray. He’s been estranged from the world due to a traumatic secret from his past and spends most of his time caring for his cherished sheep instead.

When the persistent feud between farmer Gary and his unreliable son Jack, who often causes trouble, resurfaces ancient resentments and issues, it sets off a sequence of events that escalate in destructive and deadly ways. Ultimately, these events leave deep and lasting impacts on both families.

As a gamer, I can tell you that “Bring Them Down” boasts an impressive cast, including Colm Meaney from “Layer Cake,” Nora-Jane Noone from “Brooklyn,” Paul Ready from “Motherland,” and Susan Lynch from “Enduring Love.

The movie screened at the BFI London Film Festival last month, with Digital Spy awarding the film three stars.

Though the storyline can seem shallow at moments, it effectively tackles heavy themes like inherited wounds, harmful masculinity, and the struggle between old customs and contemporary values, albeit without always providing a rich or nuanced exploration.

Bring Them Down will be released in UK and Ireland cinemas on February 7, 2025.
