Barry Keoghan hits back at claims he is a 'deadbeat dad' and says trolls discussing his parenting makes him 'furious': 'I'm not an absent father'

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for resilience and determination, I find Barry Keoghan’s journey to be nothing short of inspiring. His upbringing, marked by foster care and a mother battling drug addiction, has not only shaped him but also fueled his ambition to create a different life for himself and his son, Brando.

Barry Keoghan has countered allegations labeling him as an absent father, stressing that his primary goal is to establish a secure environment for his child.

As a lifestyle connoisseur looking back on my personal journey, I find myself reflecting on the beautiful moments of my life as a father to my two-year-old son, Brando. Sharing this wonderful adventure with my ex-partner Alyson Kierans, whom I parted ways with in the middle of 2023, has been an experience that has enriched my heart and soul.

In a conversation on the Louis Theroux Podcast, Barry opened up about his challenging childhood, spent in foster care as his mother, who passed away when he was twelve, grappled with substance abuse issues.

The actor admitted that his own childhood experiences have influenced how he chooses to raise his child, yet he strongly disagreed with suggestions that he’s not actively involved as a father.

He said: ‘If I didn’t have tough skin or the strength to have, I wouldn’t be sitting here.

Indeed, my upbringing undeniably shapes my experiences as a father, especially since I didn’t have a specific guide to follow in this role.

People may interpret such behavior as laziness, but they quickly conclude, ‘That’s not a valid reason for being an uninvolved parent.’ However, I assure you, I am not an absent father.

The movie star expressed frustration over certain remarks made about him on the internet, labeling criticisms regarding his parenting or looks as “libelous.

He added: ‘Just the audacity of some people, man. It sickens me, makes me furious. I’ve been off it (social media) because when I’m going through a role, I’m getting into character. I stay away from the internet.

However, given some spare moments, I too become inquisitive, just like many others. Particularly when it comes to understanding conversations online, especially if they involve accusations that are defamatory, or negative remarks about my personal appearance or my role as a father.

Barry mentioned that he’s simply striving to earn a decent living, building up a substantial portfolio of work, and ensuring security for his child.

In reference to his mother, Barry characterized her as “stunningly attractive, standing around six feet tall, with dark hair and an undeniably beautiful appearance.” However, he lamented that she fell victim to drug addiction.

He added: ‘It’s sad to see the deterioration of people around the area and see people kind of struggle with it and the recovery they’re in now,’

‘It caught my mum, it caught my uncle who died of it and caught my father as well.’

Hey there! I’m a die-hard fan here, and let me tell you about this incredible guy named Barry. Originating from the charming Summerhill district in Dublin, Barry had an unusual journey that I can’t help but be captivated by. He found himself moving through more than ten foster homes before finally landing with his grandmother. To this day, that experience lingers in his heart like an echo, a haunting reminder he can’t quite shake off – it ‘still kind of haunts me.’

Regarding being placed in care, Barry expressed: “You don’t easily erase memories of standing on the steps of social workers, waiting for your potential new family to arrive and play with you in the playground within their office. It’s about hoping it will work out, then moving to an entirely new location and a completely unfamiliar home.

Also worth mentioning, those car rides remain vivid memories for me, and it’s understandable if she finds them troubling. It seems to be a kind of affliction.

In conversation with The Sunday Times, Barry shared that since his mother passed away 19 years ago, he has been praying to her daily.

He admitted that losing his mother ‘wasn’t a shock’, adding ‘But oh, she was so beautiful.’

At school, Barry found it challenging due to his reputation as a mischievous student. He was often excluded from school plays because of his tendency to engage in playful distractions.

However, it was later disclosed that acting provided a means for him to cope with certain traumas from his youth, following his initial attempts at careers in both boxing and soccer.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d share that I’ve seen an actor rise to fame by gracing the screens of global box office sensations such as The Eternals and Batman. However, it was his exceptional portrayal of Dominic Kearney in The Banshees of Inisherin that truly earned him critical acclaim.
