In the books by George R.R. Martin, Lyonel Baratheon is married, but his wife isn’t a prominent character. While she exists within the story’s background – particularly in the Dunk & Egg stories and some historical details about Westeros – she isn’t a central figure.
The name of Lyonel’s wife isn’t revealed in the original stories, but they have at least one child together.
Unnamed Daughter
Similar to Lyonel’s wife, his daughter remains unnamed in the books of A Song of Ice and Fire, but she plays a crucial role in the larger story of Westeros.

It’s important to realize that the books don’t clearly state how Lyonel and Ormund Baratheon are related. Ormund is only mentioned as Lyonel’s heir, which means he could be his son, nephew, or even grandson – the exact family connection isn’t specified.
Since Lyonel is the Lord of Storm’s End and Ormund will succeed him, we’ll treat Ormund as if he were Lyonel’s son in the story. However, it’s important to remember that this connection hasn’t been officially confirmed.
After Lyonel Baratheon died, his son Ormund became Lord of Storm’s End. However, Lyonel was deeply angered when his daughter’s intended husband secretly married another woman. To resolve the resulting conflict, King Aegon V Targaryen—the current king—arranged for his youngest daughter, Raelle Targaryen, to marry Ormund, Lyonel’s heir, as a peace offering.
Ormund’s marriage to Raelle strengthens the ties between the Targaryen and Baratheon families. Years later, he becomes Hand of the King, serving Jaehaerys II Targaryen.
Although the precise family connection between Ormund and Lyonel isn’t clear, it’s known that Ormund is Robert Baratheon’s grandfather.
Raelle Targaryen
Raelle Targaryen married Ormund Baratheon to create an alliance, and their union ultimately led to the birth of Robert Baratheon. This marriage became a pivotal moment in the history of Westeros.
Raelle was the youngest child of King Aegon V Targaryen and his wife, Betha Blackwood. Interestingly, her marriage inadvertently marked the start of the Targaryen dynasty’s fall. Robert Baratheon was the first to successfully overthrow them, claiming the Iron Throne and ending their reign.
Steffon Baratheon
Steffon Baratheon was the son of Ormund Baratheon and Raelle Targaryen, and the father of Robert Baratheon. He took over Storm’s End from his father and maintained close ties with the Targaryen family, who ruled as kings during his life.
Steffon and Aerys II Targaryen (known as the Mad King and Daenerys Targaryen’s father) were close friends and cousins. For most of Aerys’s rule, Steffon was the lord of Storm’s End. Later, Aerys brought him to King’s Landing to be a member of his small council.
Aerys II was becoming increasingly unstable, and he started to believe that Tywin Lannister and his own son, Rhaegar, were planning to take the throne. Because of this, he sent Steffon Baratheon to Volantis to search for a wife for Rhaegar, believing Steffon was the only person he could still rely on.
Steffon couldn’t find a suitable wife for Rhaegar, but rumors suggested that upon his return, King Aerys intended to appoint Steffon as Hand of the King and dismiss Tywin Lannister. Sadly, Steffon and his wife perished in a shipwreck on their way home.
As a huge fan of the show, I always found the irony surrounding Steffon Baratheon and the Mad King fascinating. It’s incredible to think that Steffon was the only person Aerys Targaryen truly trusted, yet his own son, Robert, was the one who ultimately led the rebellion that brought down the Targaryen dynasty. It’s a really powerful and tragic twist of fate.
Cassana Estermont
Cassana Estermont was married to Steffon Baratheon and was the mother of Robert Baratheon. She died at sea while traveling with Steffon back from Volantis, where he had been looking for a potential wife for Rhaegar Targaryen.
It was a heartbreaking tragedy when their ship sank so close to shore on the way home. Cassana and Steffon perished before the eyes of their sons, Robert and Stannis.
Robert Baratheon
Robert Baratheon, the son of Steffon Baratheon and Cassana Estermont, was the king of Westeros at the start of Game of Thrones. He was the first ruler to sit the Iron Throne who wasn’t a Targaryen in centuries, breaking their long reign since Aegon the Conqueror first united the Seven Kingdoms.
Robert is best known for fighting against the ruling monarchy, but he didn’t have any true, legitimate heirs. Although he had children with Cersei Lannister, they weren’t actually his biological children. He did have several illegitimate children—bastards—with other women, meaning his lineage will continue through them.
Because it’s unclear if Ormund Baratheon is actually Lyonel Baratheon’s son or grandson, their exact family connection is unknown. However, Lyonel is still related to Robert Baratheon as either his great-grandfather, a distant cousin, or an uncle.
Cersei Lannister
Cersei Lannister was married to Robert Baratheon and was part of the powerful Lannister family, being the sister of Jaime and Tyrion and the daughter of Tywin. She had three children with Robert, but it was later revealed that Jaime, her brother, was their true father, not the king.
As a longtime viewer, I always found Cersei Lannister to be a fascinating, if terrifying, figure. After the tragic death of her son, Tommen, in the Season 6 finale, she finally ascended to the Iron Throne. Throughout both the Game of Thrones series on HBO and the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, she consistently functioned as one of the major villains driving the conflict – a truly compelling antagonist, even if you hated her.
Stannis Baratheon
Stannis Baratheon was Robert Baratheon’s brother, and the son of Steffon and Cassana. When Robert died in Game of Thrones, Ned Stark argued that Stannis was the rightful heir to the Iron Throne because Joffrey was actually the product of an incestuous relationship between Cersei and Jaime.
This announcement sparked the War of the Five Kings, and Stannis became deeply involved in the conflict. During this time, he also became associated with Melisandre, a priestess who practiced magic.
However, Stannis had a wife named Selyse and a daughter named Shireen.
Selyse Florent
Selyse Florent was married to Stannis Baratheon and was the mother of their daughter, Shireen. In the TV series Game of Thrones, Selyse is remembered for her unwavering faith in the Lord of Light, which led her to tragically agree to the sacrifice of Shireen in the hope that it would help Stannis win the war and claim the throne.
Selyse quickly understood the error of her actions, but it was already too late – Shireen had been burned at the stake. Overcome with sorrow, Selyse then took her own life by hanging.
Shireen Baratheon
Shireen Baratheon was the daughter of Stannis and Selyse, and the niece of Robert Baratheon. She had a skin disease called greyscale. In the TV series Game of Thrones, Shireen shared a very close bond with Ser Davos.
Stannis, along with Selyse and Melisandre, tragically sacrificed Shireen, believing it would give him an advantage in the battle for the Iron Throne. Unfortunately, this act didn’t help him win, and he was ultimately defeated and killed.
Renly Baratheon
Renly Baratheon was the youngest son of Steffon and Cassana, and brother to Robert and Stannis. He played a key role in the War of the Five Kings, fighting against his brother Stannis.
After Stannis made an agreement with Melisandre, she used her magic to kill Renly.
Joffrey Baratheon
Joffrey Baratheon was officially the son of King Robert Baratheon and Queen Cersei Lannister, but Robert wasn’t his biological father. Joffrey was actually the product of a secret relationship between Cersei and his uncle, Jaime Lannister.
After Robert’s death, Joffrey became king, but proved to be a cruel and terrible ruler. He was ultimately poisoned and killed at a wedding by Olenna Tyrell and Petyr Baelish, also known as Littlefinger.
Joffrey also already notably spoiled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones Season 4.
Myrcella Baratheon
Myrcella, like her brother Joffrey, was legally recognized as the daughter of Robert Baratheon and Cersei Lannister, though Jaime Lannister was actually her biological father. To keep her safe from the dangers and power struggles in King’s Landing, her uncle Tyrion sent her to live in Dorne.
Tommen Baratheon
Tommen was Cersei and Robert’s son, though not biologically Robert’s. After Joffrey died, Tommen became king and reigned briefly. He married Margaery Tyrell, but following a devastating explosion at the Sept of Baelor, he took his own life. This paved the way for Cersei to become queen.
