Bam Smack Pow comic book tournament: Villain fighters Tier 1

As a longtime fan of comic books and action-packed battles, I must say this fight card is nothing short of exhilarating! Let me walk you through my thoughts on these titanic tussles.

The TopMob comic book fighting tournament continues. So far we’ve seen some upsets like No. 1 ranked Superman losing to No. 16 Doctor Strange during round 1 of the superheroes bracket. However, on the villains’ side, Homelander lost to Doomsday. The only shocking part is Homelander getting votes.

In the following set of combatants, there was a well-matched group of superheroes. This time around, the battle outcomes seemed evenly distributed. Here are the final scores.

  • Shang Chi over Gambit (66% to 34%)
  • Midnighter over Green Arrow (53% to 47%)
  • Wolverine over Black Canary (63% to 37%)
  • Batman over Nightcrawler (73% to 27%)
  • Spider-Man over Gamora (78% to 22%)
  • Captain America over Daredevil (73% to 27%)
  • Elektra over Nightwing (55% to 45%)
  • Cassandra Cain over Iron Fist/Danny Rand (81% to 19%)

With the conclusion of the first round featuring our heroic combatants, let’s delve into the next phase: the matchup of infamous supervillains. How will these notorious baddies perform when pitted against one another? Time to discover their clash of powers.

How were the brackets created?

In my gaming world, these leaderboards kind of resemble sports tournaments. The character sitting pretty at the top squares off against the one lurking at the bottom rung, while the second-place contender faces off against the second-to-last. But fear not if you’re at the tail end of the list, as it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the least formidable. Factors like significant wins, powerful abilities, and popular appeal come into play here too.

Indeed, popularity plays a significant role for a reason: A less recognized character often lacks the same level of visibility as others, consequently not reaching as broad an audience. For instance, Wonder Woman consistently features in prominent storylines because she is not only powerful and a formidable fighter but also adored by many. On the other hand, someone like Invincible develops into a great hero and one of the strongest characters in comics. However, he hasn’t been around as long as most others on this list, which affects his recognition level. This aspect matters greatly.

Then, and this could be the most important, there’s the personality to consider. A character is more than their powerset. Victor von Doom is a genius who should’ve been the Sorcerer Supreme years ago. The problem is his arrogance. That personality trait is why he continues to lose Reed Richards. There are also heroes and anti-heroes like John Constantine. Is he a better magician than Dr. Strange? Probably not, but he’s willing to fight dirty and use other people to win. That has to be considered.

1. Deathstroke vs 16. Deadshot

It’s clear that this match-up promises to be the most thrilling in the tournament. Deadshot’s marksmanship, being unparalleled in comics, keeps him at a safe distance from Deathstroke and his deadly blade. Yet, intention and execution often differ greatly. After all, Deathstroke is the world’s top assassin. He’ll devise a strategy to seize an advantage.

There is no doubt about it: This would be the showdown that people would be talking about.

No. 2 The Gorgon (Tomi Shishido) vs No. 15 Ra’s al Ghul

Tomi Shishido possesses extraordinary speed and power, the ability to read minds, and the capability to transform someone into stone with a glance. On the other hand, Ra’s al Ghul has been alive for countless centuries and holds an unparalleled knowledge of strategic planning that others have long since forgotten. As you might guess…

No. 3 Lady Shiva vs No. 14. Bane

In the realm of comic book characters, Lady Shiva stands among the most formidable fighters. Even Bane, who has managed to break Batman, is no match for her in terms of skill. It’s questionable whether there’s enough venom on Earth to defeat her. Yet, if Bane were to grasp her just once, the battle might swiftly end.

No. 4 Shredder vs No. 13. Kraven the Hunter

Don’t underestimate either person. Kraven is one of the few people who’ve hunted and beaten Spider-Man. Shredder regularly fights and defeats the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This will be a bloody and hard-fought match.

No. 5 Taskmaster vs No. 12 Lady Deathstrike

Is it possible for Taskmaster to employ his uncanny ability to mimic movements, learned from observing countless battles, to predict Lady Deathstrike’s attacks? Or is the formidable skill set of Yuriko Oyama beyond what even Taskmaster can handle?

No. 6 Cheetah vs No. 11 Sabretooth

In this contest, it’s the titanic clash of the sharp-clawed creatures. Sabretooth boasts greater strength and a superior regenerative ability, while Cheetah outpaces all with her lightning speed and has even bested Wonder Woman in combat. Few can claim such victories. The polling for this showdown among supervillains might be the most tightly contested.

7. Mystique vs No. 10 Green Goblin

As a die-hard fan, I’d like to point out that Mystique isn’t necessarily stronger or faster than the Green Goblin, but she excels at psychological warfare. By transforming into someone who strikes fear in Norman Osborn, she can often provoke irrational behavior from him. However, it’s important to note that using this tactic doesn’t always guarantee success; as we saw in the “Thunderbolts: Secret Invasion”, the Skrulls tried a similar approach and were swiftly eliminated.

No. 8 Joker vs No. 9 Bullseye

In a twist of fate, both nemeses have pushed their archrivals to the brink of demise. The Joker has caused more chaos for The Dark Knight than any other adversary, while Bullseye has proven to be an equally daunting challenge for Daredevil. Although Bullseye boasts greater skill, it’s crucial not to underestimate the unpredictable nature of The Joker. The Clown Prince of Crime has triumphed over Batman in the past, and comic book enthusiasts know that even a formidable foe like Bullseye may back down when fear strikes. Could the Joker’s terror be so potent that it causes Bullseye to falter?
