Bam Smack Pow comic book tournament: Superhero fighters tier 1

As a seasoned comic book reader with decades of experience under my belt, let me tell you about these thrilling match-ups!

In the ongoing TopMob comic book fighting competition, the second round focused on the villains. Contrasting with the unexpected outcomes in the hero bracket, the victors in this round generally fit expectations.

Unsurprisingly, Doomsday met his end at the hands of Homelander with an overwhelming majority vote (84% to 16%). En Sabah Nur emerged victorious over Omni-Man, albeit narrowly (59% to 41%). The electorate showed strong faith in Black Adam over Sentry (25% to 75%). However, I was taken aback by Thragg’s defeat at the hands of Gorr the God Butcher (29% to 71%). Loki triumphed impressively over Lobo with a landslide victory (81% to 19%), while Sinestro suffered a decisive loss against Thanos (95% to 5%). Brainiac fell to Injustice Superman by a significant margin (24% to 76%). Lastly, Darkseid’s victory over Anissa was the most one-sided yet, with an astounding 98%.

But how will our superhero fighters bracket go? Let’s find out!

How were the brackets created?

Consider the comic book tournament similar to sports competitions. The character ranked first takes on the one at the bottom end, second-ranked faces off with the second-to-last, and so on. Even though you’re at the bottom doesn’t automatically make you the weakest; factors such as significant wins, unique abilities, and popularity are all taken into account.

If you’re questioning why popularity contributes to a particular ranking, let me clarify. A character that isn’t widely liked doesn’t receive the same level of attention as more popular ones. For instance, Wonder Woman is often featured in significant storylines not just because she’s powerful and an excellent fighter, but also because she’s adored by many readers. On the other hand, consider a character like Invincible. He develops into a remarkable hero and one of the strongest characters in comics. However, he hasn’t been around as long as most others on the list, which can influence his rankings.

Perhaps the most important of all factors to consider is personality. A character is more than their powerset; Doctor Doom may be a genius but he’s also extremely arrogant, which is why he continues to lose to Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four. There are also heroes and anti-heroes like John Constantine. Is he a better magician than Dr. Strange? Probably not, but he’s willing to fight dirty and use other people to win. That has to be considered.

Writer’s note: Characters like Moon Knight, Deadpool, and Red Hood are in a different tournament.

1. Shang-Chi vs 16. Gambit

In the realm of Marvel Comics, Shang-Chi is renowned for his exceptional fighting skills. He’s managed to outmatch individuals endowed with extraordinary powers while wielding a staff. On the other hand, Gambit boasts an impressive track record, having bested beings across the galaxy through his remarkable agility and formidable mutant abilities. However, it’s not always as one-sided as it may seem.

2. Midnighter vs 15. Green Arrow

Midnighter’s tech enables him to foresee fight outcomes. Who else shares this knack? That would be Prometheus… and the Green Arrow ended his life. Interestingly, even though Midnighter possesses extraordinary strength, speed, and invincibility, Oliver Queen has managed to defeat individuals with similar abilities as well.

3. Wolverine vs 14. Black Canary

In this battle, Wolverine’s rapid healing, sharp metal claws, and bone structure definitely give him an edge. However, don’t underestimate Black Canary. Her exceptional combat skills are matched by her powerful sonic cry, which could neutralize Wolverine’s enhanced hearing as a counterpoint to his advantages.

4. Batman vs 13. Nightcrawler

Ultimately, it seems likely that Batman will emerge victorious in this encounter. He’ll figure out Nightcrawler’s teleportation method and use it against him. However, it’s essential to remember that Nightcrawler has more than just teleportation abilities. He’s exceptionally agile and skilled with a sword, making him a formidable opponent for Batman, who has faced many challenging foes before.

5. Spider-Man vs 12.Gamora

The Most Dangerous Woman in the Galaxy vs the Amazing Spider-Man. Before you give this fight to Spidey, remember that Gamora has beaten Thanos. This isn’t the easy fight people think it will be. I fully expect the voting to be close.

6. Captain America (Steve Rogers) vs 11. Daredevil

Previously, Captain America and Daredevil have clashed, and these battles are never straightforward. In this instance, it’s not the comic book creators deciding the victor; instead, it falls upon you to decide if a Super Soldier can outmatch the Man without Fear from Hell’s Kitchen.

7. Nightwing vs 10. Elektra

In combat situations, neither Nightwing nor Elektra take their adversaries lightly. They’re both nimble warriors with a robust tolerance for pain. What sets them apart is that Nightwing relies on his gadgets while Elektra exhibits ruthless tactics. This fight promises to be particularly tight in this round, and if it were to occur in the comics, it would likely result in a bloody confrontation.

8. Iron Fist vs 9. Cassandra Cain

In this upcoming battle, Iron Fist needs to strike Cassandra Cain to be impactful, something Batman has hinted she could do to him if desired. This is a point worth considering. Danny Rand should not underestimate her, as he might find himself defeated before realizing what happened. Conversely, Cassandra can’t afford to treat Danny as a novice either, or she may be the one left dazed.
