Ballerina’s Box Office Flop: Is the John Wick Franchise in Trouble?

I’m quite fond of the “John Wick” series, but I must admit that the timeline inconsistencies in “Ballerina” left me a bit annoyed. Still, I felt it was a decent film, if not particularly outstanding. Unfortunately, the spinoff’s poor performance at the box office has raised concerns for me. I worry that the franchise might only thrive with Keanu Reeves as the leading actor, and I sincerely hope that’s not true.

Ballerina Has Big Stars, But Not Big Returns

In the movie “Ballerina,” Ana de Armas demonstrates her ability to lead a film, while other cast members such as Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, and the late Lance Reddick contribute an abundance of style and elegance. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that Keanu Reeves, who was initially just announced for a cameo in “Ballerina,” ended up having a more significant role in the film.

Despite the movie’s celebrity appeal, its earnings at the box office have fallen short. As per recent figures from Box Office Mojo, the film “Ballerina” has grossed approximately $92 million globally. With a reported production budget of $90 million, there is potential for modest additional theater revenue, but it seems likely that the final tally will be disappointing. This outcome leaves me concerned about the future of the series, particularly spinoffs not featuring Reeves, such as the upcoming project starring Donnie Yen as his character, Caine.

Can The World Of John Wick Succeed Without John Wick?

Chad Stahelski, Derek Kolstad, and Shay Hatten have crafted an extraordinary universe in the “John Wick” film series. Remarkably, they’ve achieved something rare in Hollywood nowadays – establishing a new franchise without utilizing pre-existing intellectual property. The four films have resonated with both fans and critics, with “Ballerina” receiving acclaim from critics and viewers who’ve watched it. However, it appears that not enough people are eager to watch a film that doesn’t center around the character of John Wick.

Given the popularity of the character and the success of all the films, such as “Ballerina”, one might wonder if this franchise could prosper without its main character. At this point, I can’t say for sure, but if it is going to thrive, it would require strong box office performances.

The Future, With And Without Keanu Reeves

The fifth installment of the John Wick series is in production, and there’s a high probability that it will be just as well-received as the previous ones. Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski are set to return, and given their track record, it’s unlikely that this film won’t live up to – or surpass – its predecessors in terms of quality and success. Additionally, Stahelski is enthusiastic about a spinoff focusing on the character Caine, which will not involve Keanu Reeves.

Conversely, there’s also the subtle issue that neither the film “Ballerina” nor its spinoff prequel show, “The Continental,” have had remarkable success. The series, featuring Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell, available on Peacock, received mixed reviews, and despite expanding the universe, it didn’t offer many new elements.

In other words, we find ourselves right here and now, knowing that the future of the John Wick franchise shines with Reeves’ legendary character at the forefront. Yet, I ponder if it can continue without him. Frankly, I sincerely hope it does, as I yearn for more of this captivating universe in my life.
