Ballerina takes place at a surprising time in the John Wick world
Ballerina spoilers follow.
For some time now, it has been understood that the film Ballerina falls within the timeline between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. However, the formal summary for the movie seemed to add complexity when it stated that it is “set amidst the events” of Chapter 3.
Since Keanu Reeves took on the character of John Wick again in the movie ‘Ballerina’, there was some confusion about how this would transpire, as the trailer hinted at a major showdown between Wick and Eve Macarro, played by Ana de Armas.
What to Read Next
In Chapter 3, Wick was constantly evading assassins worldwide, making it difficult to understand how he could spare time to travel to an unspecified location and engage in a fight with another Ruska Roma assassin for unknown reasons. Given that the events of Chapter 3 unfold over seven days, it seems challenging to pinpoint where this break occurred.
Now that Ballerina is out in cinemas, we know the answer – but it is a surprising one.
In the previews, it’s clear that John Wick and Eve encounter each other at a ballet academy overseen by the Director (played by Anjelica Huston). This meeting takes place relatively soon in Ballerina, and it ties into the scene in Chapter 3, where Wick requests safe passage to Casablanca from the same Director.
In the trailers, there’s a quick exchange between us that I find myself reflecting on often. Eve inquires about my abilities, and I respond: “It seems you’ve got some of it in you already.
Initially, Eve doesn’t undertake her first mission to safeguard Katla Park (performed by Choi Soo-young), but later on, she embarks on this venture. However, this event doesn’t directly connect to the main storyline of Ballerina. Instead, the movie skips ahead two months, showing Eve fully immersed in her role as an assassin.
It’s only during the climactic scene of the movie Ballerina that Eve and Wick reunite, with the Director tasking Wick to prevent Eve from causing mass destruction in a peculiar cult, which is headed by the Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne). This cult maintains an uncertain truce with the High Table.
If Eve manages to assassinate the Chancellor, a full-scale conflict will erupt between the cult and the High Table. The Director believes that Wick might be able to persuade or permanently halt Eve from doing this. However, rather than convincing or eliminating her, Wick chooses to ally with Eve in their joint mission to overthrow them instead.
The intriguing aspect of the meeting between Wick and Eve in the film series is its specific timing within the John Wick narrative.
Previously stated, Chapter 3 spans a period of seven days. Following the two-month leap in Ballerina, this interaction occurs after the events of Chapter 3. It’s unlikely you need to be reminded that at the end of Chapter 3, Wick was left for dead and rescued by the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne).
In “John Wick: Chapter 4”, six months have passed since the incidents of the previous chapter, and we find John Wick continuing his training and spending time with the Bowery King. Contrary to our initial assumptions that he was in hiding during this period, the movie “Ballerina” reveals otherwise.
It seems that Wick felt obligated towards the Director because he had gotten her into a tricky situation in Chapter 3 when he asked for her assistance. It was probably this debt that led him to agree to travel to Hallstatt, Austria to assist with Eve.
Considering the havoc they wreaked and the casualties they left behind, it appears hard to believe that the High Table remained unaware of their actions. Therefore, one may find themselves questioning why they didn’t attempt to intervene against Wick sooner if one is particularly meticulous.
However, since this storyline features John Wick who has a knack for surviving even after tumbling down numerous staircases, we’ll go along with it.
