With Ballerina now available to stream on Prime Video after its theatrical run, more people are discovering this often-overlooked spin-off from the John Wick universe. Officially called From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, it’s the first movie to expand the John Wick franchise, and though it doesn’t quite reach the level of the original four films, it’s a well-made and exciting action thriller.
Honestly, I was really hoping Ballerina would do better in theaters. They pushed Keanu Reeves’ appearance as John Wick so hard in the marketing, but it didn’t seem to translate to ticket sales. Now, it’s looking doubtful we’ll get any more of those From the World of John Wick spin-offs, which is a real bummer. I thought Ana de Armas’ character was fantastic – a genuinely compelling antihero, and I was already imagining a whole series of action movies centered around her. It’s a shame it might not happen.
From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina Is A Big Streaming Hit On Prime Video
Following a disappointing performance in cinemas last summer, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is now a top 10 hit on Prime Video. The movie is similar to Resident Evil 4, but set within the John Wick universe. It follows a skilled mercenary who goes undercover in a dangerous European town, where everyone is trying to kill her, all to rescue a kidnapped child from a secretive cult.
Ana de Armas shines as an action star. While she showed promise in a memorable scene with James Bond in No Time to Die, this is her first time leading an action film, and she does it flawlessly. She’s convincing in the physical scenes, naturally charming, and delivers witty lines with perfect timing.
While the story isn’t quite as polished as the first John Wick movie, it still tells an epic tale with a strong emotional center. It would be disappointing if we didn’t see Ana de Armas reprise her role as Eve, as she’s excellent, and the film’s ending leaves the door open for a fantastic follow-up.
Why More People Didn’t Give Ballerina A Chance In Theaters
Despite getting good reviews and having strong trailers, the movie Ballerina didn’t perform well in theaters. However, the film’s failure isn’t necessarily its fault; it’s part of a wider problem in the movie industry. Spin-off films often struggle to attract audiences, as we’ve seen with Lightyear, The King’s Man, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, all of which also underperformed at the box office.
Spin-offs are often seen as attempts to quickly make money in Hollywood, and their quality can vary wildly. While a talented creator can occasionally turn one into a surprising success – like with shows such as Andor, Wonka, and Peacemaker – they usually don’t live up to expectations. The film Ballerina faced an additional challenge: audiences are being more careful with their money during tough economic times, meaning they’re choosing more selectively what to spend on entertainment.
