Bake Off Star’s IVF Struggle
Laura Adlington expressed her disappointment towards various fertility specialists who advised her to slim down prior to conceiving her ‘miracle’ IVF child, a situation that left her feeling frustrated.
36-year-old celebrity from The Great British Bake Off shared in 2022 that she needed to accept the possibility of not having a family due to medical advice stating she’d have to shed approximately 14 stones (about 196 lbs) to conceive.
Just a week ago, the enthusiastic home baker and supporter of body positivity caught everyone’s attention by revealing that she and her spouse Matt are set to welcome their first baby.
To assist followers who might be facing the same challenge, Laura posted about her personal IVF journey on Instagram on Monday.
She shared: “I’ve received numerous queries regarding the location of our In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment, and I thought it would be helpful to disclose this information for those who may find themselves in a similar situation.
‘Despite investing considerable resources on medical consultations and examinations, we were consistently advised about the necessity of weight loss. If there’s anything I can do to assist in this regard, please let me know.’

She added: ‘Following extensive investigation, we visited The Lister Fertility Clinic in London. To my knowledge, it’s the sole clinic in the United Kingdom without a maximum Body Mass Index (BMI) threshold.’
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a straightforward method that employs both your height and weight to determine whether your weight might be excessive in relation to your stature.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share some insights about body mass indices. For grown individuals like us, a Body Mass Index (BMI) falling between 25 and 29.9 is considered on the heavier side, often referred to as overweight. On the other hand, if your BMI reaches 30 or above, it’s categorized as obesity. It’s essential to keep an eye on these numbers for our overall health and well-being.
For a long time, Body Mass Index (BMI) has been a commonly used tool for determining health and weight status. However, it does have its limitations. For instance, BMI fails to differentiate between muscle mass and fat, which means that an individual like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who is muscular and lean but has a high weight, would technically be classified as obese according to this measurement method. This can seem strange or inaccurate when considering his physical fitness.
Laura went on: ‘They look at everyone on a case by case basis. My BMI was around 45.
I had to go through some extra steps, but they were the unique ones who saw me as an individual rather than just a statistic.
‘Overall, I had a fantastic time working with them. Although they’re quite occupied, which may at times make things feel rushed like an assembly line, the staff there are simply delightful and have consistently provided us with excellent support.’
She mentioned that she wasn’t in good spirits when she made the post, and thus she pledged to offer more details to her followers during an upcoming question-and-answer session.

After enduring nearly a decade of infertility and being advised to shed approximately 14 stone for the possibility of pregnancy, I, an ardent admirer, found myself overjoyed by Laura’s long-awaited baby announcement.
Laura announced her happy news on Instagram on Sunday, having decided in quiet contemplation to explore the option of In Vitro Fertilization.
With much joy, she announced that after nine long years of battling infertility, they’re thrilled (and slightly astonished) to welcome their tiny IVF miracle in October ✨.
As a fervent admirer, I understand that news such as this might bring a pang, particularly when you’re deeply invested or going through challenging times. Therefore, don’t hesitate to mute or step back if it feels too much. Remember, my heart is with you, sending waves of love and understanding your way.
It’s taken a lengthy, at times solitary journey to reach this point, an experience that those who have been following my journey or tuned into my podcast for some time may recognize.
About a year and a half back, we had come to terms with the possibility that parenthood may not be in our future. Yet, secretly, we chose to explore In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
I chose to keep this matter private, opting not to broadcast it on social media or discuss it with my family, as I wanted to prevent any additional stress from building up.
Previously, we experienced an unproductive attempt and a terminated one, followed by the exciting discovery a few months back that I am now expecting.
As a devoted supporter, I’m thrilled to delve deeper into our incredible voyage in the upcoming weeks. For the moment, however, I’m simply bursting with excitement to unveil our latest developments to each and every one of you. Frankly, it’s hard for us to grasp just how fortunate we are!
2022 found me harboring a long-held aspiration – to embark on the journey of motherhood, having previously chosen not to start a family.
To Fabulous magazine, she expressed: “If you haven’t experienced infertility and the pain of longing for a child but being unable to conceive, then let me tell you, it is the most challenging ordeal I have faced.
The television personality, who graced the 2020 season of the Channel 4 program, revealed her long-held dream of becoming a mother and questioned its significance when she was unable to conceive.
She mentioned: “I’ve never considered the phrase ‘I wish to end my life’, but there have been times when I felt I didn’t want to continue living. On several instances, I reached out to the Samaritans and found their help incredibly beneficial.

After discussing the matter with her physicians, Laura made an effort to shed some pounds, but she also pondered over the idea of bariatric surgery before ultimately concluding that it didn’t suit her needs.
The individual, battling with weight issues since the age of eight, found it challenging to shed enough weight for successful In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
She mentioned: ‘Losing that much – approximately 196 lbs – was incredibly challenging for me. I can’t help but think it might continue to bother me, especially as I grow older.’
As a committed follower, I’ve been open about my own struggles with conflicting thoughts regarding my weight. I’ve emphasized the significance of truthfulness and transparency, yet I find myself drawn to the idea of weight loss treatments such as Ozempic.
However, each day passes without fail, thoughts of wishing to be smaller persist in my mind. Despite acknowledging that every body is valuable, I occasionally grapple with the feeling that my own might be flawed or misaligned.
I aspire to lead a lifestyle untouched by diet fads, yet I sometimes ponder if shedding some pounds might simplify matters. I respect others for modifying their physiques, but I find myself grappling with self-disappointment over my own desires…
As someone who takes pride in tailoring my outfits to flatter my figure, I often ponder about the ease of clothing choices that come with a more standard sizing system.
the speaker advocates for body confidence while acknowledging personal struggles with self-image and questioning whether a smaller physical presence might make life easier.
‘Although weight loss injections aren’t a quick solution, I must admit that the constant buzz about them and seeing so many people using them makes me wonder if they could work for me. On one hand, I want to resist societal beauty norms, but on the other, I desire to feel attractive according to those standards…

She went on to say: “Amidst these conflicting feelings, I often find myself at a loss. The intricacies of my connection with my body (and nourishment) are tangled and complex, and revealing this side of me makes me feel exposed. However, I believe it’s crucial to be truthful.
Previously, the beloved contestant from Great British Bake Off shared that for quite some time, she had been aiming to lose weight for the purpose of improved sexual experiences. However, it was only after gaining self-assurance that she managed to achieve this goal.
Laura admitted that she frequently procrastinated because of her weight, believing that she would appreciate experiences such as intimacy, exciting endeavors, and vacations more fully once she had lost some pounds.
Now that Laura discovered self-assurance within herself, she has openly declared that she will no longer pause her life anymore, understanding that life’s brevity demands action.
During an open conversation, Laura shared that she had a habit of delaying tasks or not acting on them, saving them for what she perceived as her past self.
As a devoted advocate, I’ve often found myself expressing, “Laura 2.0 will embark on more exciting journeys, take more vacations, enjoy deeper intimacy, and foster stronger friendships.” However, upon reflection, it seems I might be inadvertently suggesting a pause in your current life. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is precious and fleeting.
Just because you’re larger in size doesn’t mean your life should be confined; even with insecurities, embrace the spirit of living.
