Tuesday morning’s BAFTA nominations celebrated many achievements, but also included some surprises, most notably the complete shutout of Wicked: For Good from the key award categories.
Last year the first Wicked film earned seven nominations, and came home with two wins.
While the first film was a hit, the sequel hasn’t performed as well. This became even clearer after it received no Oscar nominations and only two nominations for the BAFTAs.
Despite receiving nominations for its costumes, hair, and makeup, the film directed by Jon M. Chu didn’t receive any acting nominations for its stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
Another surprising omission at the BAFTAs was Guillermo del Toro, who wasn’t nominated for Best Director. Despite this, his film Poor Things received eight nominations overall, including one for Jacob Elordi in the Supporting Actor category, and several recognizing its technical and creative achievements.
The movie wasn’t nominated for Best Director, Best Film, or Best Adapted Screenplay, even though it had been considered for Oscars in those categories.
The acting awards have been unpredictable this year, as four Oscar nominees didn’t win at the BAFTAs.
The cast includes Amy Madigan in ‘Weapons,’ Delroy Lindo in ‘Sinners,’ Wagner Moura in ‘The Secret Agent,’ and Elle Fanning in ‘Sentimental Value’.
However, some performers were nominated for a BAFTA award despite not receiving an Oscar nomination. This includes Paul Mescal for his role in Hamnet, Jesse Plemons for Bugonia, and Odessa A’Zion from Marty Supreme.

Following its strong showing at the Academy Award nominations, the film One Battle After Another received a total of 14 nominations, with Leonardo DiCaprio, its lead actor, also being recognized.
The film Sinners received the second-highest number of nominations with 13. Marty Supreme and Hamnet both earned 11 nominations. Frankenstein and Sentimental Value each received 8, while I Swear and Bugonia garnered 5 nominations apiece. The Ballad of Wallis Island, Pillion, and F1 each received 3 nominations.
The nominees for Best Film are Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, and Sinners and Sentimental Value.
