BAFTA 2025: Outrage as Timothy West, Bernard Hill, and Brian Murphy Omitted from In Memoriam Tribute

2025 BAFTA viewers felt dismayed when cherished actors Timothy West, Bernard Hill, and Brian Murphy were omitted from the In Memoriam segment during the ceremony held on Sunday, a decision that left many viewers with a sense of disappointment.

In a heartfelt tribute, Jeff Goldblum, aged 72, performed As Time Goes By on the piano as poignant images of recently deceased celebrities were displayed on the screen behind him. This emotional segment was dedicated to our cherished stars who have left us.

It was noticed by keen observers that among those being honored were stars like Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, James Earl Jones, and Donald Sutherland. However, it was also observed that three British acting talents were not on the list.

In November 2024, at the age of 90, Timothy passed away with great sadness. He had a remarkable career, gracing both stages and screens, and was awarded a TV BAFTA in 1976 for his exceptional portrayal in the series “Edward the Seventh.

In May 2024, at the age of 79, Bernard, renowned for his work in “Boys from the Blackstuff” and “Lord of the Rings,” who was twice nominated for TV BAFTAs, sadly passed away.

Finally comedy actor Brian, who won Best Actor TV BAFTA in 1985, died aged 92 earlier this month.

1. “Viewers were dismayed: ‘BAFTA, why was Bernard Hill overlooked in your tribute?'”: “Really, leaving out Bernard Hill from the memorial? That’s just unacceptable.”

2. “It’s baffling that the incredible late Timothy West who won a BAFTA, passed away in November 2024, was not mentioned at the awards show.”: “The fact that we did not honor the amazing late Timothy West, who won a BAFTA and died in November 2024, is mind-boggling.”

I’m sorry for any confusion in my previous response.

“I was saddened and disappointed that Brian Murphy wasn’t acknowledged in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment during The BAFTAs. Given his substantial contributions to TV and film throughout his life, I thought they would have found room for a tribute. His fans will never forget him, and his legacy will carry on.

For an evening filled with unforgettable entertainment, the EE BAFTA 2025 Awards made a comeback, honoring the exceptional movies of the year and the talented individuals who breathe life into them on screen.

At the 2025 BAFTA Awards, Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody were the big winners, taking home the prizes for Best Actress and Best Actor respectively. Meanwhile, Conclave and The Brutalist shared the spotlight, each receiving four awards at the glamorous event.

At The Royal Festival Hall, Adrien (age 51) and Mikey (age 25) graciously received their awards for their outstanding performances in “The Brutalist” and “Anora”, respectively, where they each played the leading roles.

On this special evening, the grandest cinema event in Britain resumed, graced by the presence of David Tennant as the master of ceremonies, accompanied by a group of distinguished presenters who handed out awards all through the night.

Against a formidable roster of ten contenders, the film “Conclave” emerged victorious in the exceptional category of Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs, further bolstering its collection with two prior wins for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.

In a impressive showing, “The Brutalist” garnered four accolades: Adrien was honored as Best Actor, Brady Corbet received recognition as the Most Outstanding Director, the film also earned awards for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.

Adrien publicly expressed heartfelt sentiments towards England, stating that he’s been feeling remarkably at home recently.

He expressed his heartfelt gratitude: “I’m deeply appreciative. I want to extend my thanks to the British public for welcoming me and my artistic projects. This means a great deal to me, as England has begun to feel like home recently. I will hold these expressions of kindness close, thank you all.

Brady expressed his deep gratitude and humility, stating that the title of ‘best director’ doesn’t exist. He likened it to a jest or a playful remark.

Accepting the BAFTA award for Outstanding British Film for Conclave, director Edward Berger expressed his profound gratitude: ‘It’s an immense privilege to be recognized as an outstanding British film, even though I’m not a native! I feel incredibly welcomed here. In these challenging times for democracy, many institutions that once united us are now being used to divide us.

Edward Berger, the director of Conclave, was thrilled to win the BAFTA award for Outstanding British Film. Although he’s not from the UK, he feels very welcomed there. He believes we are facing a difficult time for democracy because many institutions that used to bring people together are now causing division instead.

Occasionally, it can be challenging to maintain hopefulness in such situations, yet that’s exactly why we create films, and that’s why we crafted this film.

Beyond being thrilled about Mikey’s Best Actress accolade, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride when the independent film Anora, which outshone blockbusters at the Critics Choice Awards last week, took home the award for Best Casting.

With an emotional acceptance speech filled with exclamations, Zoe Saldana collected the Best Supporting Actress award for her outstanding role in the Mexican film titled Emilia Perez.

As an ardent admirer, I found myself echoing the sentiments of a renowned actress, 46 years young, who, in a moment of haste during a live broadcast, was promptly whisked away from the camera following a series of exclamations that began with “f***” three times, as the countdown seemed to rush her.

Zoe wept profusely while accepting the award, acknowledging that receiving this honor was incredibly validating and truly meaningful, considering she had been informed by speech coaches in the past that her British accent might not be suitable.

Listing off her thank yous, Zoe said: ‘Oh my god I’m getting a countdown. F*** f*** f***!’

Despite some divided opinions due to its premiere, the Mexican film featuring Selena Gomez boasts an impressive 11 nominations.
