Bad Sisters star Sharon Horgan reveals her father’s death ended her three-year sobriety as she candidly opens up about trying to quit drinking habit

Sharon Horgan recently shared her experiences with sobriety, explaining she didn’t drink alcohol for three years. Sadly, she stopped being sober after her father passed away.

I was so saddened to hear about the passing of Sharon Horgan’s father, John, over Christmas. She’s spoken about how she was actually doing really well and hadn’t been drinking before he died, which makes the loss even more poignant. It’s just heartbreaking to think of everything she’s going through.

She shared that the loss actually brought her and her brothers and sisters closer, and it inspired her to have a toast – something she hadn’t done in years.

She said: ‘It wasn’t like, “My dad died and I had to have a drink”.

‘I just wanted to, with my brothers and sisters, drink a Guinness. We all needed it.’

She continued: ‘I didn’t go back in full bore. It was very, very occasional.’

Sharon explained on Dax Shepard’s podcast that she’d felt good about having changed her drinking habits, thinking she wasn’t drinking as much anymore. But she admitted that old patterns eventually started to reappear.

The Irish actress and writer paused filming for the second season of the popular Apple TV show *Bad Sisters* to spend time with her family following her father’s death. She had previously discussed this decision.

Announcing his passing on social media at the time, she wrote: ‘My darling dad died at Christmas.’

He had reportedly been ill for some time.

The actress, known for her role in ‘Catastrophe,’ shared that she stopped drinking in her early fifties because she wanted to improve her overall health and take charge of her life.

Getting sober, she said, made her feel much clearer and more energetic, though she admitted it sometimes made her a bit difficult to be around.

Okay, so I totally admit it, I was *obsessed*! Everyone said I was being annoying, which, honestly, I don’t think I was! I wasn’t trying to convert anyone or anything. It just… suddenly hit me that I needed to go for walks. Not to get anywhere, not for exercise, just to really *see* everything around me, you know? It was just… beautiful, and I needed to soak it all in!

Before all this happened, there was definitely a pub right there at the end – I remember it vividly. It completely changed how I saw things, and honestly, I was obsessed. It felt like my mind was racing, everything was just…on fire with new ideas.

Sharon, a mother of two daughters – Sadhbh, 21, and Amer, 17 – who she shares with her ex-husband Jeremy Rainbird, recalled telling her daughters, “Do you remember when I used to have a glass of wine with dinner every night? Sometimes I even had two.”

You know, I was talking to some people recently and realized they had no recollection of something I thought was pretty key. Honestly, I was a little surprised! It made me revisit the topic myself for a bit, but I’ve since moved on. It was just a temporary deep dive, really.

Sharon separated from her husband, businessman Jeremy, in 2019 after 14 years together. She then dated Tim Burgess, the singer of the band The Charlatans, for two years.

Just two months ago confirmed she is dating her Bad Sisters co-star, Barry Ward.

Okay, so she was talking about getting back into drinking after being sober for ages, and she said it felt *exactly* like when she completely changed her life before – like a total rebirth, you know? It was this huge, overwhelming feeling, and she was just trying to explain how intense it was. Honestly, it’s fascinating to hear her talk about it – it’s like she’s describing something truly transformative!

She explained, ‘It was just the thrill of being able to drink again.’ She admitted to feeling a little lightheaded and had been treating herself to good wines.

I vividly remember the first time I ate meat after avoiding it for sixteen years. I had an intense craving for it – I just really wanted some! It felt similar to that strong desire when I started drinking alcohol.

But, she added, she’s learned to temper that eagerness.

She explained it wasn’t a current habit, but something she used to do without even realizing it. She’d just always be drinking wine, almost automatically.

She admits alcohol isn’t her only indulgence. She also struggled with nicotine addiction, including vaping, gum, and cigarettes. About four years ago, she tried hypnotherapy to help overcome these habits.
