Disney is working on a fresh start for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and the director who made the first three films has sadly confirmed he won’t be involved.
Gore Verbinski recently stated that although he thinks there are still stories to be told within the pirate adventure series, he’s finished working on it and has moved on.
Gore Verbinski on if he’ll return for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie
Director Gore Verbinski recently told ScreenRant, while promoting his latest movie Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, that he isn’t planning to direct another Pirates of the Caribbean film.
He explained that he’d put his all into the show, and revisiting it wouldn’t feel as fresh or exciting as working on the original movies, so he wasn’t interested in continuing.
Despite the challenges, Verbinski admitted the series could have more stories to tell. He also hoped that new viewers would enjoy it as much as possible.
He admitted he was feeling creatively empty. He felt good about his previous work, seeing it as a valuable learning experience. Verbinski explained that he thrives on challenge, believing that projects become less engaging once they feel too familiar or safe. He also noted the pressure of limited time and the abundance of stories waiting to be told.
Back in June 2025, Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, mentioned they had started working on the script for a sixth film. He emphasized that making the movie depended on having a great script, and confirmed it would be a fresh start for the series – a reboot. He also added that both new and familiar characters would appear in the new installment.
Around this time, Orlando Bloom, who played Will Turner in the original three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, said he’d be interested in returning to the series. He mentioned on the show This Morning that he’d love to see the original cast reunite.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly two months later, producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared that Johnny Depp would be willing to return as Jack Sparrow, as long as he was happy with the script. He explained that the quality of the writing is the most important factor for Depp.
