Bad Monkey episode 1 and 2 recap: Florida has gone bananas!
As a lover of gritty mysteries with a twist, I must say that “Bad Monkey” on Apple TV+ has already reeled me in with its intriguing premise and eclectic cast. With my past experiences of solving puzzling cases and uncovering hidden truths, I can’t help but feel a kinship with our protagonist, Detective Andrew Yancy, as he navigates the murky waters of Key West in search of answers about the severed arm found by an unfortunate fisherman.
Starting today, you can stream the opening episodes of “Bad Monkey” on Apple TV+, offering viewers a wealth of intriguing elements to explore. To help refresh your memory, let’s summarize the significant occurrences – beware, spoilers lie ahead!
The opening episode of “Bad Monkey” dives straight into action. A fisher finds a severed arm in Key West, Florida, which the local authorities aim to hush up due to fear of unwanted media scrutiny and tourist panic. The arm is passed on to Detective Ro (John Ortiz), who then delivers it to Detective Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a detective currently on suspension and dealing with misfortune. This is because Yancy had an affair with Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan), and things took a turn for the worse when Bonnie’s husband discovered them together.
In a fit of rage, Yancy contemplated shoving Bonnie’s husband, peacefully seated in his golf cart, into the sea, with numerous onlookers present. Needless to say, this action displeased Sheriff Sonny greatly. As a result, Yancy ultimately consented to identifying whose hand it was and keeping the information confidential, as it could potentially lead to reinstatement of his job.
In this scenario, Yancy brings the arm to Rosa, Miami’s PD medical examiner (played by Natalie Martinez), suspecting it might be connected to someone within that district. Regrettably, no missing arms have been logged, and no one in her lab fits the description Yancy provided. Yancy is instructed by Ro to dispose of the arm, but he listens to his moral compass instead and decides to keep it. This decision proves beneficial as a woman named Eve Stripling emerges, identifying the arm as that of her husband, Nick. Despite returning the arm and seemingly resolving the case, Yancy finds himself unable to move past this mystery.
The situation becomes increasingly puzzling for Yancy when he discovers that Eve is in a relationship, one that seems to be long-standing rather than recent. An unexpected twist unfolds at the funeral, as Eve’s stepdaughter (also Nick’s daughter) makes an appearance and voices her suspicions towards Eve, claiming she believes Eve was responsible for her grandfather’s death.
As we delve into the narrative surrounding Neville (Ronald Peet) and his monkey Griggs, tension arises when Neville’s home is destroyed by Christopher, Eve’s new beau, a developer constructing a resort. Desperate for a solution, Neville seeks help from the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith), a woman he thinks possesses magical powers, hoping she can vanquish Christopher and his workforce. This is where the tales of Yancy and Neville intertwine.
Rosa can’t help but delve deeper into this intriguing mystery that has been lingering on her mind since she couldn’t dismiss it. Will she and Yancy manage to unravel the truth behind Nick Stripling’s death? The initial two episodes of Bad Monkey certainly pose many questions and keep us guessing. Have you become as captivated as I am?
Bad Monkey episode 3 premieres next Wednesday, Aug. 21, only on Apple TV+.
