James Tolkan, a well-loved character actor famous for playing the principal in the Back to the Future movies, passed away this Friday at age 94.
Actor Tolkan played the role of Mr. Strickland, the principal of Hill Valley High School, in the 1985 film Back to the Future. His character was known for scolding students he considered lazy.
He reprised his role in the 1989 sequel, Back to the Future Part II, and famously called a group of criminals “slackers” while defending himself during a drive-by shooting.
The next year, he appeared as Strickland’s grandfather in Back to the Future Part III, and he went on to voice the character of Strickland again in a cartoon series based on the movies.
Tolkan is perhaps best known for playing Stinger, the officer who oversaw the training of Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards’ characters in the 1986 film, Top Gun.
Bob Gale, a co-writer on Back to the Future, confirmed that Michael J. Tolkan passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Placid, New York, according to TMZ.
Born in 1931 in Calumet, Wisconsin, to a father who traded cattle, Robert Tolkan had a challenging childhood. His father was frequently in and out of jail, and Tolkan himself left school at age 15 and joined a gang, as he shared with We Are the Mighty.
After serving a year in the Navy during the Korean War, he was medically discharged due to a heart condition. He then used the GI Bill to attend college, initially studying arts and music, but he discovered a passion for acting and ultimately earned a degree in drama.
Despite being terrified and unsure of what lay ahead, he took a $75 Greyhound bus to New York City and began his acting career.
He appeared in several iconic films from the New Hollywood era, including a role as a police officer in Sidney Lumet’s 1983 film Serpico, which featured Al Pacino as a New York City police officer who exposed corruption.
Tolkan also collaborated with director Sidney Lumet on two other films: the 1981 drama Prince of the City, starring Treat Williams, and the 1989 crime comedy Family Business, featuring Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman, and Matthew Broderick.
Years later, he fondly remembered working with Lumet, calling him his most admired director. He praised Lumet’s incredible discipline and talent, saying that he was someone to look up to and that being part of his projects was a true honor and a genuinely enjoyable experience.
In Woody Allen’s 1975 film Love and Death, which he also wrote and directed, Tolkan portrayed Napoleon Bonaparte. Diane Keaton co-starred in the movie.
He’s known for classic films like the 1983 movie WarGames, which features Michael Broderick as a young hacker who accidentally starts a series of events that could lead to World War III between the US and the Soviet Union.
He’s most famous for playing two strong, authoritative characters from the 1980s: the school principal in Back to the Future and a commanding officer in Top Gun.
Tolkan said he immediately recognized Tom Cruise’s talent while working on Top Gun, adding that Cruise was truly impressive.
According to Tolkan, Michael J. Fox, star of Back to the Future, was incredibly easy to work with. He described Fox as both very talented and naturally relaxed.
One of his most famous works was the 1990 film based on a comic book, directed by and starring Warren Beatty alongside his then-girlfriend, Madonna.
Tolkan played Numbers, a mafia accountant working for Al Pacino’s character, marking a reunion for the two actors after they last appeared together in ‘Serpico’ 17 years prior.
