Back in Action ending explained: Will there be a sequel?
Back in Action ending spoilers follow.
After an 11-year hiatus, I’m thrilled to announce that I’m making a comeback on the big screen with Netflix’s “Back in Action” – and if things go as planned, this might only be the beginning!
Fifteen years after leaving their spy careers with the CIA to start a family, Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) find themselves unwillingly thrust back into the realm of espionage as their secret identities are exposed once again, forcing them to embark on a new action-packed adventure.
Their last assignment culminated in this tricky situation they’re now facing, as Chuck, their ex-boss, had cautioned them earlier about adversaries pursuing them. Shortly thereafter, Emily and Matt, accompanied by their kids, became fugitives to ensure the safety of their family.
However, who might be pursuing them? Let’s unravel the conclusion of “Back in Action” to shed light on everything, and furthermore, discuss if this suspenseful finale hints at a follow-up movie.
Major spoilers follow if you haven’t seen the movie yet.
Back in Action ending explained: Is Chuck dead?
Initially, Emily and Matt execute a heist to acquire a crucial ICS key from the hands of the terrorist, Balthazar Gor. This key, referred to as a “master key,” possesses the power to allow its holder to command vital facilities like power stations and nuclear plants.
Despite successfully accomplishing the task, tragedy struck when their plane was intentionally damaged by terrorists affiliated with Gor. Following the harrowing experience of the crash, Emily and Matt decided it was time for a change and chose to leave their careers at the CIA, opting instead to focus on starting a family.
15 years down the line, Emily and Matt are paid a visit by their old supervisor, Chuck. He informs them of an unexpected development: their undercover status has been compromised. Chuck goes on to clarify that the CIA was unable to locate the ICS key all those years ago, and it seems their erstwhile ally, British agent Baron, has been collaborating with Gor in a bid to recover the key, as he suspects Emily and Matt may still be in possession of it.
In a tragic turn of events, Chuck doesn’t survive after being fatally wounded by an unidentified attacker. This shocking incident forces Emily and Matt to immediately leave and seek refuge in England, at the home of Emily’s mother Ginny, whom she hasn’t been on good terms with for some time. Years ago, Matt had secretly stashed the ICS key there as a sort of “insurance policy” if their operation was compromised.
Instead of their intention to hand over the ICS key to the CIA for protection, they first plan to entrust it to the CIA, expecting the agency to offer them immunity in return. However, before this could happen, a group of terrorists attacked Ginny’s residence and abducted Emily and Matt’s children.
It is believed that Baron is responsible for everything, but in reality, it’s Chuck. He staged his own demise following the deception of Emily and Matt’s deaths and entered a concealed existence, allowing Chuck to shoulder the responsibility for the missing key.
After being dismissed within a year and losing all his possessions, he enticed them out from their concealed locations because he understood they would guide him to the crucial key.
In a different phrasing: This evening at the Tate Modern event, Chuck intends to auction off the item he possesses, while holding on to Emily and Matt’s children as collateral until the transaction is finalized. During their meeting, Chuck persuades Daphne to exhibit the ICS key’s potency by elevating the Thames barrier.
Emily and Matt locate Chuck at the gathering, and with the assistance of the Baron, they pursue Chuck relentlessly. In a desperate bid to flee, Chuck considers utilizing the rising Thames barricade as an escape, even while he holds their children captive. However, Emily and Matt swiftly give chase in a speedboat along the Thames, following close behind him.
At the Tate Modern, Ginny’s boyfriend Nigel retrieves the key from Daphne and removes the security barricade. Meanwhile, Emily, Matt, and their children board Chuck’s boat and are rescued, leaping off before Chuck notices the barricade is down. Unfortunately, Chuck’s boat collides with the barrier and appears to have caused an explosion, likely resulting in his demise.
In the closing moments of Back in Action, Baron pays a visit to Emily and Matt with the news that they couldn’t locate Chuck’s body. Could it be possible that he staged his own demise once more? Given that it was perhaps part of his scheme to feign death if things went awry, he might have planned this as a way to escape with the money.
It remains uncertain whether Chuck has passed away or not, but Emily’s family appears to hold the clue for discovering this truth. So, Baron advises them, saying, “Emily, I need you to enlist a family member of yours,” and he specifically points out that it isn’t your mother, but rather your father.
It appears that Matt was unaware that Emily’s father is also involved in the spy world, just like we learned about Chuck. The details about his identity and connection to Chuck will have to be revealed in a future installment, as Back in Action doesn’t offer any insights on this matter.
Has a Back in Action sequel been confirmed by Netflix?
As of now, Netflix hasn’t verified a “Back in Action” sequel, however, it doesn’t necessarily imply that one won’t materialize.
It seems that Emily and Matt are set for another thrilling adventure, but only if the film manages to be successful enough on Netflix to warrant a follow-up.
Recently, the streaming service saw massive success with the film “Carry-On,” making it one of the most-viewed Netflix movies to date. This suggests that there is a significant demand for action movies on Netflix. Additionally, this movie marks Cameron Diaz’s return to acting, which could attract a large audience this weekend.
But right now, we’ll just have to wait and see if we’ll ever find out who Emily’s dad is.
Back in Action is available to watch now on Netflix.
