Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning has said that she sees the series as a “love story”.
The popular Netflix series revolves around the character Donny Dunn, loosely based on comedian Richard Gadd, and his encounter with a woman during his job at a local tavern.
The situation between Donny and Martha intensifies when an act of goodwill triggers an unsettling fixation within her. His life spirals out of control as she starts tracking him both digitally and physically.
Despite the show delving into some grim and unsettling aspects, actress Gunning, who embodied Martha, expressed her preference to avoid depicting the character as a “villainess.
As a gaming enthusiast, I was absolutely floored when I first got my hands on the scripts for “Baby Reindeer.” Tonight, after winning Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTA TV Awards, Gunning shared that she felt the exact same way when she first received them.
Reading the climax of the last episode left me with goosebumps, and I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, this might turn out to be something truly extraordinary.
After attempting the audition about five times, I eventually managed to convince them by being persistent, as I realized later. She chuckled at this point. And indeed, my persistence was quite reminiscent of Martha, she added with a smile.
The actress shared that she had a clear concept for her character, and she was content with how it unfolded during filming.
I’ve been mulling it over, and I believe I have a grasp on how to handle this situation. If she were portrayed as a villain or an antagonist, I feel it would be quite unfortunate because in my opinion, it’s more about love. That’s essentially how I see it playing out.
She added: “I hope it doesn’t take another 17 years for a part like Martha to come along!”
