Ayo Edebiri Blames Elon Musk for Death Threats After Viral Tweet Controversy

It’s been disclosed that actress Ayo Edebiri spoke out about facing death threats and racial abuse, which followed from Elon Musk’s unfounded speculation suggesting her as a possible contender to replace Johnny Depp in a new Pirates of the Caribbean film.

On Tuesday, Edebiri, winner of the Golden Globe for her work in The Bear, criticized Musk (age 53) for sharing a misleading article, which subsequently resulted in her facing online harassment from trolls.

In a response to the article, the influential figure with more than 216 million followers on X platforms expressed his dissatisfaction, saying, “I find Disney disappointing.

Since Elon Musk initially posted it in February 2024, the post has sparked a tremendous amount of interaction, collecting over 16,000 comments, 28,000 shares, and capturing the attention of 22 million people.

30-year-old Edebiri shared on her Instagram Stories about a past event: ‘I’m recalling when I faced some of the most extreme death threats and racial insults in my life, possibly number one incident, though certainly top 3. This was due to a fictional remake of a film I wasn’t familiar with, all because of this man (laugh out loud). So not only is he spreading hateful propaganda, he’s also foolish. (Smiling heart emojis). Moving on.’

She added at the bottom: ‘Life is, of course, a gift,’ along with a hearts-hand emoji.

Although the initial tweet Musk retweeted was removed, the text that Musk included with his retweet still stands.

Originally posted by account owner Unlimited_L, the tweet in question was explained as an accidental deletion following criticism from Ayo. The user then responded by defending their post.

‘The individuals in question are very outspoken and have been known to speak without hesitation. Ayo Edebiri held off responding for well over a year to the gossip and substantial allegations swirling around Hollywood, as confirmed by him. Interestingly enough, she chose to criticize Elon Musk. It’s worth noting that this particular post was accidentally deleted after he decided to declutter his timeline and project a more polished professional image.’

At present, Edebiri is experiencing significant acclaim in Hollywood, most notably due to her part in the highly popular Hulu show titled “The Bear.

Since 2022, she’s been acting alongside Jeremy Allen White, portraying Sydney Adamu, and has received recognition from critics for her performance in this role.

Edebiri’s remarkable performance has earned her a Critics Choice Award, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, among other accolades, for the part she played.

She made her directorial debut on the show, helming the season six episode entitled Napkins.

Ayo told Deadline that she shed tears when she first read the script.

Ayo expressed, “The piece was exceptionally well-written. It stirred me deeply, and I was profoundly touched knowing that Chris [Storer] thought of me to direct it.

‘I could see it as soon as I read it,’ Ayo added.

White also praised Edebiri as a director.

Last year, he shared with Variety: “That was the finest day. On her initial day, I wasn’t performing; instead, I was simply spending time on set, socializing… I must admit, she delivered an exceptional performance.

He said, “She’s not only a stunningly attractive actress but also incredibly insightful one. Moreover, I believe she possesses the same qualities when it comes to directing too.

Edebiri’s other work includes Inside Out 2, Bottoms, Black Mirror, Abbott Elementary, and more.

She’s next up slated to return to season four of The Bear, in addition to several other projects.
