Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield have defended their new thriller, *After the Hunt*, after some viewers criticized it as being anti-feminist. Both actors say those claims are untrue.

The psychological thriller, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August, features Julia Roberts as a professor facing a difficult time in her personal and professional life. The story begins when one of her brightest students accuses a fellow professor of wrongdoing.

When asked at the Venice Film Festival if the movie, which deals with the #MeToo movement, went against feminist ideas, Roberts explained to The Guardian that the film brings up old debates and encourages discussion.

When asked if the movie focused on the differences in feminist views between Alma and Maggie, Edebiri explained that she found it interesting how the film highlights that our bodies are always seen as political, but are also simply human and vulnerable.

She explained that one of the biggest challenges in life is trying to balance conflicting feelings or beliefs.

Edebiri believes there’s a generational divide influencing the conflict, but at its core, it’s a personal issue. She described it as a growing misunderstanding between two women that’s spiraling out of control and, while appearing political, is actually a deeply human connection failing.

Garfield mentioned that during the press conference, it seemed like the journalist who raised the issue hadn’t actually watched the movie.

It started with people pointing out potential anti-feminist themes, and that made me wonder about something bigger. It raised the question of how we can recognize when we’re being deliberately provoked or pitted against each other.

I suspect any conflict created was artificial and will generate short-term attention rather than lasting profit.

Edebiri finished by saying that it’s a challenge for everyone in the media to learn how to form genuine thoughts and reactions instead of just repeating what others say.

After the Hunt is released in UK cinemas on 17 October.
