Former Channel Nine presenter Amber Sherlock alleges she was let go from the network due to her age.
The former 9News presenter and weather reporter, recently let go by Nine just before turning 50, shared on the Stellar podcast that she feels she was considered too old for the network.
Sherlock joked that Channel Nine would never hire a weather presenter who was over 50, and it turned out he was right – and a bit surprised about it.
It’s frustrating to see a lack of representation for women over 50 on Australian television. Despite progress in the industry, there aren’t many women in this age group working regularly on camera. I believe women in their 50s have a lot of valuable experience and talent to offer.
I didn’t earn as much as some of the bigger stars, so money wasn’t the issue. It’s a shame, but it seems like the people taking over my work are a generation younger – about 10 to 15 years my junior.
A Nine Network representative explained to Yahoo Lifestyle that Sherlock’s departure wasn’t due to her age, but because of changes to how the network operates.
Nine doesn’t discriminate against anyone, regardless of their age or any other personal characteristic, they stated.
Look, people are saying all sorts of things, but let me be clear: the idea that anything could make them get rid of my favorite character is just…wrong. They’re saying it’s influencing their decisions, but honestly, they’ve already decided this role wasn’t needed for the story anymore, and that’s that! It has absolutely nothing to do with anything else, I know it!
In November 2025, 9News Sydney eliminated the position of its 6pm weather presenter.
Since then, several reporters and presenters have shared the responsibility of delivering the 6 p.m. weather forecast, while also working on other programs for the network.
Channel Nine continues to feature prominent women over 50 on its programs, such as Catriona Rowntree and Livinia Nixon from Getaway, and Deborah Knight, who presents A Current Affair.
Sherlock made a pointed comment about Nine in November, shortly after it was publicly announced that she had left the network.
During a live broadcast, newsreader Georgie Gardner unexpectedly announced a long-time colleague’s departure, offering him a farewell message on air.
Sherlock Holmes publicly addressed Nine’s recent layoffs in a detailed Instagram post, speaking out after remaining quiet on the matter.
Reaching almost 20 years on television is a significant achievement, but it’s been a true honor to be welcomed into your homes every night.
Throughout my career, starting as a finance journalist and including roles like the first newsreader for Weekend Today, I’ve had the opportunity to present nearly every type of news broadcast – from morning and afternoon updates to the 6pm and late-night news.
I recently joined the 6pm Sydney news team, working with Peter Overton and James Bracey.
Sherlock shared a photo with her message, showing her happily posing with her colleagues Peter Overton and James Bracey at the news desk.
She also noted that the Sydney news team has consistently earned top ratings for the past 15 years, which she said demonstrates their success.
After thirty years working in Australian television, I’ve learned that hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude are key to success. I’ve always believed that putting in the effort will ultimately lead to good results.
Although I had other job options, I think it’s best to move on and find something new.
