As a dedicated follower of radio broadcasting, it is with a mixture of intrigue and sympathy that I find myself reflecting on Ed Kavalee’s recent departure from 2Day FM. Having spent the better part of my career navigating the unpredictable waters of breakfast radio, I can relate to the emotions he might be experiencing.

Ed Kavalee finally speaks up about the unexpected termination of his 2Day FM morning radio program co-hosted by Hughesy and Erin.

On Tuesday, the comedian discussed how he has been coping after being let go, during an interview on Nova Melbourne’s Jase and Lauren morning radio program.

Ed, aged 45, together with his breakfast show colleagues Dave Hughes, 53, and Erin Molan, 40, were taken off the airwaves in August.

‘Something we have in common is we’ve both done our time on breakfast radio,’ Jase said.

1. You recently hosted a breakfast show on 2DayFM Sydney and then wrapped things up. Kudos to you for handling it smoothly! It’s quite challenging, I must say.

To be honest, I find it remarkably straightforward, and I might just pop over to the radio station in Adelaide without breaking a sweat.

Noticing some hesitance from the comedian concerning his recent unemployment, Lauren attempted to present a hopeful perspective instead.

‘You’ve got your life back and your mornings back,’ she enthused.

Later on, Jase inquired about Ed’s emotions towards being in a ‘gardening leave’, a situation where an employee, having resigned or been dismissed, is required to avoid work during the notice period, yet remains on the company’s payroll.

‘I just, you know, I should be shedding a tear but I’ve never felt better,’ Ed responded.

Later on, Jase posed a question: “What does it mean when they announce the show is cancelled, yet you still get paid? It’s like hitting the jackpot, isn’t it?”

Ed mentioned, “I can’t discuss this, due to my contractual agreements. However, experiencing the joy of winning Powerball is something entirely unfamiliar to me.”

‘But all I know is, when the alarm doesn’t go off at 4.30am, things feel right in the world.’

‘You can’t say that to people who are currently doing breakfast radio,’ he joked.

2Day FM made the decision to terminate their trio of hosts on August 8, notifying their audience that they will be ending the show and introducing new hosts, Jimmy Smith and Nath Roye, who currently host The Jimmy and Nath Show during night shifts.

“Hughsey, Ed, and Erin shared that they’ve cherished their time on the 2DayFM Breakfast show, but because some of their families reside in various cities, they find it challenging to make a commitment for the year 2025.”

With regret, we’re stepping back to allow 2DayFM to find the right team for their breakfast programming.

News arrived following the GfK Radio 360 Survey 4, which indicated that Hughesy, Ed, and Erin’s market share decreased by 1.4 points to 3.6% earlier this year.
