Awhina Rutene Explains Shocking Decision to Keep Son Away from Adrian After Homestays Drama!
Awhina Rutene, a contestant on Married at First Sight, has shared her challenging home stay encounter with her partner Adrian Araouzou.
To Daily Mail Australia, a 30-year-old single mom shared thoughts about revisiting Perth, her choice to keep Adrian away from her child, and her twin sister Cleo’s strong criticism of their relationship.
As I returned to Perth, it wasn’t all joy that I felt. Instead, a blend of emotions washed over me.
‘I was quite fortunate that I got to go home a few times throughout the experiment and usually I’d be so excited, even if it was just for 24 hours,’ she explained.
However, this situation was unique. I envisioned introducing my significant other to my son, family, and friends, but due to the stage of our relationship, it seemed unlikely we would reach that point together.
Awhina had no doubts about it; right from the beginning, she ensured Adrian understood he wouldn’t meet her kid. Now, she’s clarified the reasons behind this decision.

‘I think everyone can agree that Adrian and I have had a tumultuous journey so far,’ she said.
Despite finding ourselves advantageous during the study, it was merely due to setting aside many of our unresolved disagreements. Rather than addressing these matters head-on, we chose to continue with a ‘agree to disagree’ approach and proceeded.
She added that their relationship was simply too uncertain to bring her son into it.
You shouldn’t present someone to your child if you haven’t figured out where the relationship is headed. It wouldn’t be a secure setting, she suggested.
During Homestays Week, Awhina’s twin sister Cleo was frank about their relationship, labeling it as insincere, and surprisingly, Awhina concurs with this evaluation.
‘She has a point,’ Awhina admitted.
‘Cleo’s not in the experiment, so she can see it from the outside.
During the experiment, you find yourself in a simulated environment that doesn’t resemble reality. Each day starts with a series of unexpected tasks, and you spend most of your time inside an apartment watching movies with your companion. This isn’t true everyday life.
‘In reality, I have a son, a job, school drop-offs, after-school sports, friends, a schedule and Adrian has his own life in Sydney. We weren’t having those conversations about what life would look like outside the experiment. So yes, Cleo was right. It wasn’t real yet.’

In their relationship, a persistent point of strain is that Adrian tends to avoid owning up to his mistakes – a fact Awhina has recently verified.
‘Adrian struggles with accountability, we can all agree on that,’ she said.
From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I often observe that some contestants believe that if they keep quiet about certain incidents during filming, those moments might be overlooked and never end up on screen. However, I always advise them to be truthful and transparent, as authenticity shines through in any context.
She said, “It seems like participants on reality TV assume that if they don’t admit fault and apologize, perhaps the consequences won’t arise.
Instead, I wish Adrian had paused, acknowledged, and simply said, “This is true, my partner is genuine, and our emotions are valid.” A moment of honest responsibility from him could have helped us progress.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but reflect on one particularly contentious moment during our Homestay journey – the time Adrian confessed his primary motivation was the cuisine! It seemed like he overlooked entirely the significance of that life-changing trip we embarked upon, focusing solely on the delicious dishes.
However, Awhina has defended her groom.
‘I think that’s a little taken out of context,’ she said.

‘He actually got along with my mum really well. He even said off-camera that my mum was really cute and that the food she made was amazing. He did say some lovely things about my family.’
But despite his kind words, Awhina admitted: ‘Yes, he struggles with accountability. And yes, that comment about being “just there for lunch” wasn’t great.’
Cleo grilled Adrian relentlessly at lunch, refusing to back down and while some may expect Awhina to feel caught in the middle, she actually stood by her sister’s tough questioning.
‘I don’t feel like I was caught in the middle,’ she said.
Last time I met with Cleo, I had been sobbing incessantly and it seemed as if I was constantly running into a solid obstacle. No matter how hard I tried, there was no progress.
Cleo recognized my persistence and advised me to leave since it was not beneficial. However, I chose to remain and assert that our situation was excellent, which led her to inquire about the journey that brought us to this point. So, when she asked to understand how we reached such a good place, of course I wanted to explain the process.
In the homestay, Adrian kept requesting an apology from Cleo, but she didn’t offer one.
Follow up: Did Cleo ever apologize to Adrian during their stay? No, she did not.
And according to Awhina, he never deserved one.
‘Absolutely not,’ she said flatly.

‘I made it very clear – I didn’t want to hear about this apology ever again.’
Did Awhina decline to bring Adrian into her child’s presence, and now she wonders if he would have behaved appropriately if her son had been there instead?
‘It’s a hypothetical situation,’ she said.
‘My son wasn’t in the room and I guess we’ll never know.’
As the experiment heads into its final stretch, Awhina teased that the last task will be a defining moment for every couple.
‘It’s a make-or-break task for some couples, I’ll tell you that,’ she said ominously.
When asked if it affected her relationship, she simply replied: ‘I reckon it affected every relationship.’
