Award-winning global hit drama with 99% score shares highly-anticipated update on new season

The award-winning hit drama Shōgun has received a big update for its second season.

Great news! We’ve set the release date for the upcoming season. But, you’ll have to wait until January 2026 before production starts, so fresh episodes are still some time away.

Recording will be done in Vancouver, the location of Season 1; and Hiroyuki Sanada will rejoin us not just as a lead actor, but also stepping up as an executive producer.

What to Read Next

The series is inspired by James Clavell’s 1975 novel and narrates the tale of an English mariner who experiences a shipwreck in Japan, eventually encountering a powerful Japanese warlord.

The American television program “Shogun,” which is broadcasted on FX within the United States and Disney+ internationally, marked history by becoming the inaugural Japanese-spoken series to receive the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

Additionally, it received numerous awards across various Emmy categories, earning it the title of the most award-winning TV season in Emmys history. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a remarkably high 99% approval rating from 143 reviews, initially standing at a perfect 100%.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve just learned that the brilliant minds behind our beloved series, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, have recently concluded a creative gathering of writers to construct an entirely fresh tale – a brand-new chapter following the adaptation of Clavell’s novel from season one.

Plot details for season 2 haven’t been announced just yet, but it will be set 10 years on.

Last year, in an exclusive conversation with Digital Spy, Sanada shared insights on his strong bond with co-star Cosmo Jarvis. He expressed: “I felt from the start that this man would be a great collaborator, not an adversary. With each episode, our connection grew stronger and deeper.

“So by the end, even with a far long away eyeline, I could feel him very well without any words.”

Shōgun season 1 can be watched on Disney+ now.
