Award-winning doc ‘Selena y Los Dinos’ has been acquired by Netflix

The newest documentary, titled “Selena y Los Dinos,” focusing on the life of Tejano music legend Selena Quintanilla, has been purchased by Netflix. As of now, it’s planned to start streaming during winter 2025.

This film, orchestrated by Isabel Castro, incorporates unique, vintage VHS recordings captured by Selena’s elder sibling, Suzette, and blends them seamlessly with contemporary conversations with relatives and acquaintances.

Netflix announced its acquisition in a Tuesday press release.

According to Castro, the film uncovers previously unknown aspects of her journey by delving into personal archives and private conversations with her family. He expressed his sincere appreciation towards her family for their faith and cooperation throughout this project, and he’s excited for the world to witness the enchantment, emotion, and camaraderie that Selena so generously shared with us all.

Another movie about Selena Quintanilla might have appeared unnecessary – that is, until her sister Suzette, a member of Los Dinos band as well as her drummer, joined the conversation.

In addition, Suzette expressed her excitement regarding the partnership with Netflix during the Tuesday announcement, saying, “Thankful for a platform that allows us to share Selena’s story with fans worldwide.

Previously, the Quintanilla family has partnered with the streaming colossus on an occasion or two. They teamed up with Netflix for the production of “Selena: The Series”, which presents a dramatized account of Selena’s childhood, her meteoric rise to fame, and her tragic demise, with Christian Serratos portraying the Texas singer in the series.

After serving as an executive producer for a Netflix series, Suzette sought legal advice to produce her own documentary.

At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival premiere, Suzette remarked, “There are certain things that one keeps close and doesn’t share openly with everyone.” She continued, “For years, I was the one taking the photos, always behind the camera. It’s amazing to think that I’m now sharing these images with all of you.

Over the past three decades following her heartbreaking demise, the radiance of the Tejano queen has never been more dazzling, serving as an inspiration for countless Latinos and sparking a wave of new artistic talents.

The documentary showcases clips from Selena’s performances that challenge the polished image the Quintanilla family has maintained since her passing 30 years ago. It also documents, authentically, the emergence of a powerful new identity among ’80s Latino youth, symbolized by Los Dinos’ unique blend of cultures.

At the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, the movie received a special jury prize in recognition of its exceptional archival storytelling. The film was commended for its ability to transport viewers to a particular era, stirring emotions related to family, lineage, affection, and youth.

Due to an overwhelming demand to watch the movie, the organizers of Sundance Film Festival decided to take it down from their online platform. The film encountered several copyright issues because excited fans were sharing snippets from it on social media. Interestingly, this was a first for Sundance as they had never before removed a feature during the festival due to such circumstances.
