Jeremy Renner, a key member of the Avengers, has stated that his character, Hawkeye, is currently retired from superhero work. However, he hinted he’d be open to returning if the opportunity arose. The Disney+ series Hawkeye showed a transition, with Clint Barton passing the torch to Kate Bishop, and confirmed Clint’s retirement. Interestingly, his decision to step down began after the difficult Battle of Sokovia in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). A near-fatal experience, where he was saved by Quicksilver, and his desire to focus on his family, led him to leave the Avengers behind.
Clint’s retirement was short-lived, as he was called back into action for Captain America: Civil War, joining Team Cap and ultimately leading to his house arrest during Avengers: Infinity War. Though Avengers: Endgame and the Hawkeye Disney+ series continued his story – including teaming up with Kate Bishop to take on the Tracksuit Mafia – the series concluded with Clint and Kate destroying his Ronin costume, signifying his departure from that life and his commitment to spending more time with his family.
While promoting his new show, Mayor of Kingstown, Jeremy Renner, known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stated that his character, Clint Barton, is currently retired. However, he added with a smile that Hawkeye has a habit of returning, saying, “he’s always pulled out of retirement.”
He’s technically retired a few times, but he keeps coming back. He’s a dedicated family man, and his priorities are always clear, which is why he’s returned from retirement so often.
Renner concluded his message with positive news about Clint Barton’s character, saying he’ll “always be working.”
“Until he’s killed, he’s always gonna be working.”
Recent comments from the actor suggest Hawkeye might return in future Marvel movies, potentially including Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Even though Clint Barton is currently retired, the actor explained his character always steps up to help his friends, hinting he could rejoin the Avengers if they need him.
Jeremy Renner’s future with Marvel was uncertain after he publicly criticized what he called a lowball offer for a second season of his Disney+ show, Hawkeye. However, he’s now changed his tune and indicated he’s willing to return for Season 2.
Will Hawkeye Appear in Avengers: Doomsday Following His Retirement Comments?

Although Jeremy Renner isn’t currently listed among the confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday, his recent statements suggest he’d be open to reprising his role as Clint Barton if the opportunity arose.
With the Multiverse facing a major threat in the next Avengers film, the heroes will need all the assistance they can find. Clint, a highly skilled fighter and marksman, would be a great asset to the team.
Because Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson (now the leader of the Avengers) and Clint Barton were allies on the same side in Captain America: Civil War, it made sense that Sam would ask Clint to join the fight in Avengers: Doomsday – they already had a strong working relationship.
Jeremy Renner’s statements make it clear that Hawkeye will eventually return to fighting, as the character isn’t suited for retirement. However, his remark about death being the only way to truly stop him also foreshadows a potentially tragic future for the hero.
