Avengers: Infinity War’s twist could spawn an evil Captain America in Doomsday!
The movie “Avengers: Infinity War” laid the groundwork for a villainous Steve Rogers in “Avengers: Doomsday,” as per one Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) theory. As we approach the end of Phase 5 with the debut of “Thunderbolts,” the timeline for the fifth Avengers film is drawing nearer than ever. However, fans are eagerly anticipating the plot details of “Avengers: Doomsday” given that the Multiverse Saga’s premise offers numerous possibilities for the future of MCU films, opening up more doors than ever before.
One reason for the numerous theories surrounding the next two Avengers movies is their potential influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a whole. A significant point of debate centers around the possibility of reintroducing Chris Evans’ character, Steve Rogers, in a different form, possibly drawing from previous storylines established in “Avengers: Infinity War.” This scenario could materialize in an upcoming MCU film, given the groundwork already laid by the movie and Marvel’s comic book history.
Theories That Avengers: Doomsday Will Debut An Evil Version Of Steve Rogers’ Captain America Have Been Rife For Some Time Now
Following the revelation that the fifth Avengers movie in the MCU would be “Avengers: Doomsday,” instead of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” as previously announced, theories sprang up suggesting that an evil Steve Rogers could appear in the film. This speculation gained momentum due to Robert Downey Jr’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, which led many fans to wonder if Chris Evans might also reprise his role as a villainous Captain America from another universe, mirroring his initial heroic Marvel character.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I find myself intrigued by the intriguing premise of The Multiverse Saga. It’s fascinating how it revived discussions and even hinted at possibilities, such as Chris Evans reprising his role as the Human Torch in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film. This resurrection of a familiar face stirred speculation about potential future appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
However, it’s important to note that Chris Evans himself has dismissed such rumors regarding his appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Yet, history shows us that MCU actors have had to refute these kinds of speculations to maintain secrecy about their roles, even when they were part of the cast. For instance, Dafne Keen’s return as Laura in Deadpool & Wolverine and Andrew Garfield’s reappearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home are examples of this. So, while we may not see Chris Evans in Avengers: Doomsday just yet, the door is certainly left open for surprises!
Given the abundance of Marvel comics delving into the notion of an antagonistic Steve Rogers, it seems entirely plausible that this idea could find its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This is particularly feasible in a multiversal context rather than altering the original narrative of the main universe’s Captain America. In fact, the connections between Marvel comics and the storyline introduced by another Avengers movie have already laid a foundation that makes an evil Captain America plot more probable for Avengers: Doomsday.
Avengers: Infinity War Perfectly Sets Up How A Comic Explanation For An Evil Steve Rogers Can Become MCU Reality
In “Avengers: Infinity War,” there is a significant twist concerning Captain America, where it turns out that Red Skull, instead of being dead, resides on Vormir as the guardian of the Soul Stone. This stone, one of the Infinity Stones, has the power to manipulate souls. Previously, in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Red Skull attempted to use the Tesseract for his own sinister purposes.
In the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Red Skull is stuck on Vormir. Yet, across the various universes, it isn’t implausible that another version of Red Skull might have used the Soul Stone. Despite the fact that the Soul Stone demands a sacrifice of a loved one to activate its power, an alternate Red Skull could potentially still possess living relatives he would be ready to sacrifice, or be prepared to give up his life to complete the final objective of the Soul Stone.
Indeed, it’s fascinating to point out that in the comic series Avengers: Standoff and Secret Empire, I was transformed back into my prime fighting form by Kobik, a cosmic cube much like the Tesseract from the MCU. However, what I didn’t know was that during this transformation, Red Skull had also implanted me with false memories, leading me to believe I was a HYDRA sleeper agent since World War II. With Red Skull’s role in Infinity War, it certainly seems plausible for the MCU to replicate this scenario to introduce an evil version of Captain America through the Soul Stone.
In “Avengers: Endgame,” Steve Rogers returning the Infinity Stones could hypothetically create a period during which Red Skull could potentially sacrifice himself, allowing Steve to transform into an agent of HYDRA and keep the organization functioning. However, considering the original storyline, it’s also plausible that Red Skull’s plans may call for sufficient time for Rogers to age as the typical hero version does, at which point the antagonist might instead employ the Soul Stone to control the very essence of his adversary.
Why Adapting The Marvel Comic Storyline Would Work For Avengers: Doomsday
A captivating twist emerged in the Infinity Saga, when it was disclosed that Red Skull was alive and had assumed a new role; this development further interwove the later Avengers films with the MCU’s earlier productions through its connections to Captain America: The First Avenger. Since there’s been no recent news regarding this storyline, since the Red Skull’s fate and Steve Rogers’ return post-Infinity Stones remain intriguing topics, reimagining this narrative could provide an engaging spin that would enrich the stories of Infinity War and Endgame, while also adding depth to those films.
It’s intriguing that the Russo brothers once proposed a concept where Steve Rogers would embody the Soul Stone in their initial plans. However, they abandoned this idea early on, yet hints of it could be seen in the final narrative by creating a significant connection between the Soul Stone and Steve Rogers’ tales through an alternative means.
If Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom indeed shares similarities with Iron Man’s character from another universe, as suggested, it could be more fitting for the film Avengers: Doomsday to introduce a villainous version of Captain America too. This would highlight the heroism and moral values of their previous versions even further. Even if this isn’t the case for Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Doom, introducing characters like Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), who have to confront a villain that resembles their friend and ally Captain America, would add significant emotional depth to the movie and the new Avengers team.
