Just before the release of Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Evans publicly addressed a long-rumored topic. The actor, best known as Captain America, explained what convinced him to return to the role after previously suggesting he was finished with Marvel movies.
Chris Evans on why Steve returns in Avengers: Doomsday
At CinemaCon 2026, Chris Evans explained why he decided to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday. Disney’s presentation included Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Robert Downey Jr., and Evans himself. Evans clarified his return after previously stating he wasn’t involved in the film.
At a recent event in Las Vegas, Chris Evans explained he’d only return to the role if the story justified it, and he believes ‘Doomsday’ provides that justification with a compelling reason for Steve Rogers to rejoin the team (according to ScreenRant). He jokingly added that he doesn’t care for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom. A trailer for ‘Doomsday’ shown at CinemaCon included a scene of Steve Rogers reuniting with Thor.
Rumors about Chris Evans potentially returning to his role first appeared in December 2024, even before filming for the new Phase 6 movie had started. Despite these reports, Evans consistently said he wasn’t involved in interviews over the next few months. In a January 2025 interview with Esquire, he stated, “That’s not true. This happens all the time – it’s happened every couple of years since Endgame. I’ve stopped addressing these rumors… I’m happily retired!”
In an interview with ScreenRant, Chris Evans expressed missing his time with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying it was sad to be separated from the team, but he believes they’re continuing to do great work. It’s common for actors involved with Marvel Studios to avoid confirming their participation in upcoming projects until the studio makes an official announcement.
A preview for the December 2025 movie revealed that Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Peggy Carter had a son within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actress Hayley Atwell is also expected to reprise her role, as previously reported in 2024. The film, titled Avengers: Doomsday, will bring together characters from The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and the X-Men (from the movies formerly produced by Fox).
It’s currently unknown if Chris Evans will be involved in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, which begins filming this summer. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18th.
