A famous actor from the Marvel universe recently shared details about a key moment in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday. He explained how his character, Magneto, causes significant destruction in a crucial scene, giving fans a sneak peek without spoiling the whole story.
Ian McKellen enacts a potential Magneto scene from Avengers: Doomsday
While on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in February 2026, Ian McKellen let slip a major detail about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. He jokingly revealed that his character, Magneto, will be responsible for the destruction of New Jersey, adding a playful apology to the state and taking the blame for the fictional disaster. He clarified he didn’t think he was giving away too much by sharing this information, despite often being unsure of the full plot of the movies he appears in.
I was so fascinated hearing Sir Ian McKellen talk about filming! He described this one scene where he was standing there, trying to look really intense – wind in his hair, trying to be captivating. Apparently, the director kept asking him to look more furious! Then, he told Ian to just shout something – anything! When Ian asked what to shout, the director told him to yell the worst possible thing he could imagine, and he ended up shouting ‘Maago!’ It was such a funny story and really gave a glimpse into the creative process.
He’d briefly mentioned something similar in an interview with Jake’s Takes, reminiscing about the use of practical effects in the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand. He then jokingly added, “I may have accidentally revealed something… I probably shouldn’t have said I destroyed New Jersey the other day.”
Ian McKellen’s remarks led many to believe the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film will draw inspiration from the Ultimatum comic book storyline. In that story, Magneto causes worldwide catastrophes – including a massive flood that destroys Manhattan – after suffering a personal tragedy. While the comic focuses on New York City, the way and extent of the destruction sound very similar to how McKellen described what happens to New Jersey in the new film.
In the ‘Ultimatum’ storyline, Magneto famously takes control of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, using his magnetic abilities to overcome its magical protections and transforms it into a devastating weapon. While Marvel hasn’t confirmed if the upcoming film will follow this plot exactly, early trailers for ‘Doomsday’ include hints of Sentinels and characters from the older Fox X-Men movies. These clues suggest the film might be inspired by complex multiverse storylines like ‘Secret Wars’ and ‘Time Runs Out’.
Avengers: Doomsday premieres in December 2026.
